Malorix Chessel, Tiefling Cleric of Ragathiel

"I have done what sadly few of my kind have done. I have cast loose the shackles of fate and fortune, as my lord did before me. As He overcame an Infernal heritage, so too have I overpowered the Abyssal. Let the bitter old men of Kenabres throw their petty condemnations at me, I care not. I know in my soul that I am free. Such freedom requires constant vigilance and effort to maintain, but the reward is worth it. And now, having conquered the darkness within, how can I help but prevail against the darkness without?"

Malorix was a tragically common occurence in Mendev. Born to one of the native population who didn't have the heart to smother her child, Malorix spent most of his early life in the shadows, trying to keep hidden so that his demon taint didn't get him sent to the stake. As with any tiefling, his dark impulses were set to get the better of him, despite his mother's desperate attempts to redeem him. Though he loved his mother dearly, he could not see how this was possible.
Then one day, a building he broke into to find shelter turned out to have a decent-sized library within. Having little to do while waiting out the latest witch hunt, Malorix sat down to read. Many of the books were on matters of religion and the good-aligned outer planes, which Malorix found mildly interesting, until he came upon an entry that riveted his attention. That entry concerned the Empyreal Lord Ragathiel, the mighty commander of Heaven's armies. The General of Vengeance spends most of his time battling fiends, but what truly caught Malorix's attention was the battle within. Ragathiel, apparently, was the son of none other than the archdevil Dispater, and struggled for centuries to overcome this dire parentage in service to the light. But overcome it he did, and assured his place among the Empyreal Lords' ranks.
Inspired by this example, Malorix adopted Ragathiel as his own patron, and for many years fought an intense battle within himself to silence the Abyssal voices that would call him to darkness. The battle was hard-fought, but in the end Malorix succeeded in doing what few tieflings of any heritage have done: freeing himself from the taint that stained his soul from the moment of his birth. Malorix is under no illusions that such freedom will maintain itself, but is confident in his ability to battle for the light henceforth.
And speaking of battling for the light, the crap has apparently hit the fan in Mendev, and the Fifth Crusade is about to begin in earnest. It is time for Malorix to take up sword and spell, and emulate his lord in other areas...

Squall, would you allow Tieflings to take the Channel Force chain normally restricted to Aasimar?

Scott, the 20 HP from toughness is going to mean very little in the long run, just as a heads up. If you're worried about survivability, hop in chat and poke us and we'll see what we can do to in regards to feat advice.

Hey Scott, when you channel energy can you make note in your posts of Overflowing Grace, since you have that as your tier 1 path ability?

Overflowing Grace (Su): When you heal a creature with positive energy (such as by channeling positive energy to heal the living, using cure spells, or using lay on hands), any affected creature at full hit points (whether already at full hit points or healed to full hit points by your channeled energy) gains a +1 sacred bonus on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws for 1 minute. If you channel negative energy to heal undead, this is a profane bonus rather than a sacred bonus.

Vision and chat with prisoners

Code: Select all

[Begin]
The evening service goes well for Malorix and he retires feeling sad at the loss of life but happy to have met out so much vengance for the poor souls who were trapped on Paradise Hill
He sets his prayer book to Ragthiel near his cot and turns in for the night.
Now Malorix finds himself on a battlefield the likes of which he has never seen.  Angels and Demons are everywhere and the fighting is hard on both sides.
Futher ahead, near the front lines (if they could be called that considering the relative chaos in this place) stands a five winged angel wreathed in a pulsing fire, as though a barely controlled rage was all that stood between it's glorious victory, and it's own immolation.
off to the left is one more higher power that Malorix recognizes, a stunning battle maided wielding a longsword and shield.
"Ha!  I told you he'd make it!" shouts the Flame angel to the battle maiden.
"Showoff.  Do what you intend and be quick about it Ragthiel." she quips back.
"You've done a good job so far Malorix" Ragathiel says to you as he strikes down another demon.  "You have met out strong vengeance this day.  But there is more that I must ask of you."
Malorix Chessel
"Name it, my Lord."
Eric Holland
"You have made the tough journey to control yourself, and have done well. There are others out there who are capable of the same control, but they will need you to guide them down the path."
"Many of them do not think it possible.  They are deceived by their  birth.  It is your duty to bring them to the light, as your faith has brought you."
Malorix Chessel
Malorix reflects for a moment on his own past, and how familiar that sounds.
"Thinking it impossible, and deceived bytheir birth; this once described me, and yet here I stand. I shall do this thing, my Lord. Where shall I begin?"
Eric Holland
"That I cannot say.  But know that the best Vengeance is that delivered by the deceived to the deceiver."
"You're taking too long!" Iomedae chides Ragathiel.
Malorix Chessel
"Very well, my Lord. Oh, and if I may..." He cannels energy to aid his master
*channels
Eric Holland
Ragathiel's pulsing fire becomes much more stable and he seems to stand just a little bit taller, "Go, with my blessing.  Remember your duty."
Malorix wakes up in his cot
it's just before dawn
Malorix Chessel
He sits up.
He thinks about what he has just seen.
Eric Holland
He turns and notices his prayer book is different than before.  It has twice as many pages, and where once was a well worn cover in a new leather binding with Ragathiel's symbol displayed in silver and copper.
Malorix Chessel
He opens it up and sees what is to be found on these new pages
Eric Holland
The book has neat handwriting and seems to pulse slightly with divine power.  The chapters indicate that it describes Ragthiel's journey from the plane of Fire, to his confrontation with Dispater, to his struggles to prove himself to the angels, to his defeat of Typhon
By studying a chapter he knows that he can be infused with some of his Lords strength for the day.
There are 11 chapters to study each one giving a different bonus
Malorix Chessel
"Thank you, my Lord. I believe I need to speak to some people."
He steps out of his tent and looks around.
Having secured the book, of course
Eric Holland
Outside it is still dark and not many soldiers are up yet. Malorix is pretty sure even Epicette is asleep now
*10 chapters
Malorix Chessel
Malorix looks toward the castle. "We'll need to take that before we can do anything of the sort. Still, I must remember to make sure those prisoners are well treated in the interim. They and I have much to discuss."
Eric Holland
Malorix makes his way to where the prisoners are being kept and is let in to see some of them.
Malorix Chessel
He asks the guard on duty how they're holding up before going in.
Eric Holland
"They seem to be doing fine.  They got normal rations last night and none seemed particularly injured."
Malorix Chessel
"Disappointed, I suppose? They seemed quite sure of themselves before."
Eric Holland
"The tieflings were, though we killed all of them. Um er, all the ones on their side I mean sir." the guard says realizing his mistake too late.
Malorix Chessel
"That... is unfortunate. I was hoping to have words with some of them."
Eric Holland
"I'm sorry sir.  There might be one or two captured.  You could try one of the other cells."
Malorix Chessel
"Even if there aren't, I may yet get something from these."
"But I shall check that other cell, thank you."
Eric Holland
"Good luck sir" the guard says as you head to the other cell.
Malorix is in luck and finds 2 tielfings among the captured cultists.
Malorix Chessel
Malorix recalls their resonse to Daveed's demand for surrender. "So... power, huh? How's that working out for you?"
*response
Eric Holland
"Just grand." one of them says with obvious sarcasm.
The other jsut glares at Malorix
Malorix Chessel
"You are aware that the demons had no intention of giving you anything of the sort? That you were to them little more than a speed bump to put in our way?"
Eric Holland
"Maybe so.  Maybe not.  Doesn't much matter now does it?"
Malorix Chessel
A thin smile appears on Malorix's face. "No, I suppose it doesn't. Luckily, other avenues are available."
Eric Holland
The quiet one leers at Malorix.  "What's your purpose here?"
Malorix Chessel
"Why, I wanted to talk to you two. All of you, really, but especially you two."
"Tell me, why do you suppose we're on opposite sides of these bars right now?"
Eric Holland
"Cause it was a better choice than dying."
Malorix Chessel
"You know what I mean. Given that we're both touched by the Abyss, why am I not fighting for the same side you were?"
Eric Holland
"Cause you've no love for those who brought you into this world?"
Malorix Chessel
"Love? For the demons? There's no word in the Abyssal language for the concept. They not just have no love for me or you, it's a rare demon indeed who even understands the idea."
Eric Holland
"Or maybe you sucked up to someone long enough that they let you out of the gutter."
Malorix Chessel
"And who would I have sucked up to? I grew up in a city run by Prelate Hulrun and his inquisitors. Attempting that would not have ended well for me."
Eric Holland
"Look I don't really give a damn how you got there.  Go gloat to someone else."
Malorix Chessel
"I'm not here to gloat. I'm here to get you to think. I'm not here because of ingratitude or brownnosing or any of the standard means for our kind to advance. So think already. Why am I here?"
Eric Holland
"Someone decided to show some charity.  To torment us.    I don't know.  Enough of your damn riddles."
Malorix Chessel
Malorix smiles a bit more broadly. "I am here becuase I found another way. And in a sense, charity is the right word, if marking the path forward counts as charity." He indicates the symbol of Ragathiel on his armor. "Tell me, do you recognize this symbol?"
Eric Holland
"It's not one of the major goodie two shoes gods, but other than that, no." says the quieter one
Malorix Chessel
"This is the symbol of Ragathiel, one of the great Empyreal Lords. Now, what pops into your mind when I say that?"
Eric Holland
"That you're a servant to be thrown away just as you claim we were."
Malorix Chessel
"Well, I like to think I have a bit more job security than that. Even if I should perish here, I will be continuing the fight in the hereafter, and have every confidence of being much more powerful then. The servants of the Abyss, meanwhile, spend ten thousand years eating shit before some demon decides to snack on them."
"No, what it would mean to the average layman, is that He's the angel in charge of Heaven's armies." He pauses fo effect. "It certainly doesn't conjure up imagery related to his Archdevil father."
*for effect
Eric Holland
"An angel's the son of an Archdevil?  That doesn't make any sense."  The talkative one says.  THe second tielfing sits and considers you with some level of doubth
*doubt
Malorix Chessel
"Oh, indeed it doesn't, as far as most are concerned. But to you and I, it has a great deal of meaning. At the core of it all, He is to a great extent the Celestial equivalent of us."
Malorix then spends the next few minutes explaining Ragathiel's history to the assembled prsioners, culminating in his ultimate acceptance as an Empyreal Lord.
"...And so, you see. There is indeed a way forward unto the light. One would think that the direct son of an Archdevil would have no chance at assuming the heights of Celestial power, and many would say that such redemption is out of reach for we mere mortals who bear the blood of demons, however thin. But neither of these things are true. The both have come to pass, and there is no reason that the latter in particular need be rare. I was once as dark and skeptical as any of you, but no longer. I saw Ragathiel's light, and came to understand.: the road to our redemption need not be long or difficult. It is, in fact, marked and paved by He who came before us. I'll not pretend that hazards will not present themselves, for trials always befall the righteous. But the end is glorious for all who make the journey. When death comes to claim me on this world, I shall stand transfigured in the vanguard of Ragathiel's army, there to vent the fury infused in my be the fiends upon its source, the true source of all our ills. And so can you."
*infused in me
Eric Holland
They are captivated by your story, and Malorix notices that it is time for his morning prayers.  It seems best to let them think on what he has told them.  Pushing too hard too fast won't do him any good.
Malorix Chessel
"Don't answer me right away. I will make sure you're taken care of. Reflect on what I have told you, and be encouraged."
As he leaves, he locates Aravashnial, who was placed in charge of the prisoners, and asks him to play nice. There's yet hope for some of them.
And will do the same for Daveed and Irabeth when the opportunity arises. For now, prayers.
Eric Holland

Malorix Chessel
Given that the party is about to assault a mighty fortress, Malorix feels that chapter 5 might provide valuable insight
Eric Holland
Chapter 5 describes Ragthiel's fights inside the Iron fortressess of Avernus where he was outnumbered and constantly beset from all sides.  Malorix feels like Ragthiel himself may be watching his back today.  +4 Sacred bonus to AC against attacks from an opponents that flank you.

Hey Scott: a few ideas/suggestions/requests on your spell selection, since you character seem to be underpreparing your spell slots by a notable margin and you mentioned needing to re-examine spell preparation a some point.

Shield of Faith: with your Crusader archetype's Legion Blessing ability, you can cast Shield of Faith on 4 of us (all 5 of us at lvl10) at once with a duration of 1min/level. This is enough to last through several battles, and Metamagic Extend Spell rods are cheap too to make it last longer. This currently grants +3 deflection AC right now and will eventually go up to +10 Deflect AC (at CL18 + Mythic Shield of Faith at tier 10). Requires only a lvl1 + lvl4 spell from you. Additional Shield of Faith spells can always help if someone gets dispelled, so this would make a nice go-to for extra 1st level slots. Spells like Magic Weapon and Divine Favor (which you currently prepare) are mostly obsolete and not even worth the action to cast them at this point.

Protection from Evil, Communal: this grants the entire party immunity vs charm, compulsion, possession, and attacks by summons when facing evil creatures; really nice to have when we're facing succubi, shadow demons, and the likes. Since you have the mythic ability that allows touch spells at 30ft, this doesn't even have to be a pre-combat buff for you.

Resist Energy, Communal: preparing 1 is probably enough; this is great when there's an environment obstacle or if there are foes who specifically use one element in their natural attacks/weapons. It's 10min/lvl duration also lasts a while.

Prepare 2+ Prayer: this is probably the most action-efficient and resource-efficient buff/debuff you have, and it stacks well with whatever buffs others may use. So if you don't know what to do with 3rd level slots, add more Prayers.

Freedom of Movement x 2: your previous use of Freedom of Movement showed that it's actually really effective given Epicette's tendency to use Web/Black Tentacles. At 10min/level duration, these spells are buffs that last the whole dungeon; Malorix and Daveed are our only two meleers, and they'll both be able move in without caring about field impediment spells.

Crusader's Edge: with his crit build, Daveed will love this spell; best used if we get 1 round of prebuff prior to a major fight (as Prayer is better saved after meeting the enemy so they get the debuff).

Other suggestions:
consider listing Destructive Smite (from your domain) on your character sheet's weapon/attack 'special properties' box. I've never seen you use this and it's a nice ability to remember; standard action attack at +1/2 level bonus with 3+WIS/day use
