I don't think that's sufficient proof, it being a nickname, and probably is from before Burlew wanted to make him androgynous.

Indeed. If it was a certainty that V is a guy, why would he have shared a room with Haley in every inn thus far? A better case can be made for V being a girl.

Incidentally, on the off chance that it wasn't clear before that Belkar is Chaotic Evil, it is now.

His dad had something to do with the accident, so it's pretty clear why he didn't want to take up magery.

It's character development stuff, so, yeah, it's new, it just helps put other things in context.
