Weapon Types

Postby Zanaikin » Fri May 15, 2009 2:34 am

Since people (most particularly Judson) have been wondering.

Lasers - Concentrated limited-spectrum light type energy weapons. Because lasers are lightspeed weapons, they have the highest precision of all weapons types, as well as the one of the highest range (short only in comparison to space-combat cruise missiles and warp weapons). However, their low energy-to-power ratio often leaves much to be desired in their damage output, thus they're typically used as counter-weapons instead of offensive weapons, for example the primary point-defense weapons are laser clusters.

Photon - A magitech weapon type that manipulates Photons originally developed by the Kingdom of Mercure, although its technology could be found in a number of Gallian (western continent) militaries. Photon weapons are very similar to lasers in all respects, except it uses a far wider spectrum range, typically including that of the visible spectrum. Because it can precisely manipulate vector and intensity, photon weapons have been adapted in different ways, such as focusing arrays capable of joining together multiple beams (used by towers of the Magi Line) and condensed light sheaths around melee weapons.

Plasma - Partially ionized gas in high-energy states. Plasma weapons have higher energy-to-power ratio than most other common energy weapons (e.g. lasers, electricity), but their range and precision is significantly limited as plasma bolts are consumed by the environment as they travel across atmosphere.

Plasma, Adhesive - A special version of plasma completely made up by me. It is a high-density variation that have adhesive properties towards any mass, thus sticking itself upon the heaviest object it touches and proceeds to burn through. It is also possible to treat composites to become unreactive to certain types of adhesive plasma, thus making them 'immune' to it. Commonly referred as the 'plasma sheath', adhesive plasma is known only to be used by the Imperials as an anti-armor weapon, as it sticks onto armor platings and burn through them instead of being deflected. They typically appear in Imperial high-frequency swords and grenades.

Plasma, Shock Lance - Another version of plasma made up by me. The Plasma Shock Lance (PSL) is a combinatorial plasma-electricity weapon that sends out a continuous stream of plasma guided by a torrent of electrons. Although their range is very limited (often around half a mile), the PSL can manage a high intensity of plasma that makes it one of the most devastating Imperial weapons.

Cannon - Traditional explosive-based cannons are mostly obsoleted as military equipment in this era, mostly due to their low stats in all categories, especially when compared to railgun weapons which parallel the cannon in most ways. The sole advantage of cannons however belongs to their low-power requirements (if not completely mechanical) and their greater variety of ammunition, as most types of equipment can easily resist against the forces of a conventional cannon.

Railgun - Railgun weapons are projectiles fired by electromagnetic (EM) or gravitic accelerators, although 'railgun' typically refer to EM powered railguns. Because of the powerful EM fields and high acceleration involved, most rail weapons are unsuited to launch machinery, and instead relies on solid slugs, chemical shells, and occasionally magitech shells. Of the two conventional ammo types, chemical shells have more power, whereas solid slugs are resistant to point-defense as they are not prone to detonation (but could still be blown off-course by explosive chaffs). However, railgun projectiles are often hard to shoot down due to their high speeds and low flight time. The downside is that rail weapons tends to be require both high power consumption and a physical ammunition supply. They also have a relatively low fire rate in comparison to conventional guns, energy weapons, and missiles.

High-Velocity Missile (HVM) - Despite the name, HVMs are actually a railgun-type weapon rather than a missile-type weapon. HVMs are gravitic rail weapons capable of hurling out shells with magnitudes higher acceleration, producing a high initial velocity measurably in percentile lightspeed. This higher speed gives then proportionally high range and precision alongside far greater destructive power, and makes them even harder to intercept by active point-defenses. Furthermore, all HVM shots exceed standard escape velocity, allowing them to strike anywhere on the planet, although at abysmal accuracies when firing at extreme range. Similar to EM railguns, HVMs' high acceleration forces make it unsuitable for launching most machinery.

Missiles - Missiles are classified as weapons capable of self-propulsion and vector change, and are typically equipped with seekers or other forms of onboard guidance equipment. Large missile weapons (and only missiles large enough to protect itself against the launch forces involved, such as cruise missiles) may also be built in combinatorial with rail weapons, which serves to provide a higher initial launch velocity and thus greater range and accuracy. Unlike other weapons, missiles may be launched en-mass due to their self-propulsion, as most noticeable with external missile packs that can unload entire salvos simultaneously. Their greatest drawback is high magazine space as well as slow reload speed due to their size. Furthermore, their low speeds and long flight times makes them vulnerable to interception by defensive fire. Missiles are typically used as external 'one-shot' weapon loads, counter-weapons, and long-range delivery weapons.

Ion - Ion weapons are simply particle accelerators that spit out a continuous stream of subatomic particles after accelerating them to near light-speed. Ion weapon are most well known as the Sacred Kingdom's primary energy weapon type, emitting a long-ranged beam capable of cutting through virtually anything. Imperial prototyping and research into Ion weapons have lasted for decades, but have never been brought into widespread use as they never managed to improve performance to a level that would mark it over existing weapons. However, prototypes and battle records show that Ion weapons, if deployed, would prove to be both more damaging and longer ranged than existing Plasma Shock Lances.
