The fireball combusts the flammable fumes rising out of the acidic ground below the trolls (+1 damage/die) and turns the gate area into an open oven, cooking the trolls within it.
(Scott: fireball & scorching rays aren't your only good fire spells you know. Some contenders include Orb of Fire (L4), Firebrand (L5), I don't need to point out L7's Fire Storm & Delayed Blast Fireball... once you get them.)
(I do advocate the idea that some spells pierce antimagic field. Any conjuration-type spell that does not include a SR goes under this category.)

(Scott: warmages list comes with those... you should try making a 'reduced' warmage spell list, with only the spells you'd actually use on a common basis. This is cause the warmage spell-list is huge and takes a while to find good spells in it if you just stare at the full list)
