Game Meet 12

Postby Zanaikin » Sat Sep 02, 2006 3:43 pm

GAME MEET #12

The battle began as Kilar and his team rode straight for our team with menacing hostility. In the initial rounds of engagement, our team members manage to quickly dispatch all four of Kilar’s subordinates. However, Kilar himself proved to be on a different level as he consistently evaded attack after attack while retaliating with devastating blasts of lightning and sonic energy, which dealt considerable damage to Pallvara and XAT. During the battle, while Kilar’s anger rose steadily after watching his comrades get killed, he also seems to gradually grow tired of the nonstop fighting. Kilar questions our team members for their persistence and then traps the group with a forcecage effect.

With no method of breaking out of the forcecage, the battle came to a halt as the mission team had no choice but to listen to Kilar speak of the current events in a rather seething mood. He claims that the path Strusler is taking will lead to nothing but destruction for the entire world. The enemy has shown that they are far superior to us in military strength, and if we do not relinquish the sword Erylon they could wipe out this world in their quest for it. If we do, then they would have achieved their goal and leave this world, returning to wherever they originate from within the multiuniverse and continuing whatever their goal is in a manner which would not affect Penthiae any further.

After presenting the information and receiving a disagreement of opinions from Kati’s team, Kilar tells them that it’s part of his job to keep outside intervention from affecting the ongoing battle to the north, and that the forcecage should be more than enough to keep our team from interfering. After that he went to check on the conditions of his comrades, discovered that it was hopeless, and teleported from sight.

XP: 6,000 (Kati at 83,785xp, Pallvara at 78,925xp, XAT at 78,725xp)

Once Kilar left, Kati immediately began to contact Strusler using her communication rod. After about twenty minutes, four teleportation circled opened up around the team. Through them, Strusler and three other fully armed and armored cavaliers arrived at the scene, each mounted atop a Pegasus. Two of them Kati recognizes are Malayar Salim, the second in command of the Misalin Guard Standard, and Adret Cocoran, the commander of the Fist of Misalin cavalry. The third member is a female human clad in a mithral breastplate with the Silver Knight insignia and wielding a double-sided lance over twenty-foot long. Strusler was quick to shatter the forcecage with a disjunction spell before asking Kati and her group for further information regarding the current situation. Kati processed to report her observations of the ongoing battle to the north, the confrontation with Kilar, and the fact he was damaged by a holy storm spell. Strusler seems uncertain on his view on news regarding Kilar, but decides that he shall discuss it later with Kati after the mission is over.

During this time, about three hundred feet away towards the northwest, a number of white energy-like “bubbles” appeared on the snowy surface. Mere seconds later, the energy bubbles unfolded itself and vaporized, revealing nine human figures standing in their positions. As Kati filed her report to Strusler, the nine walked towards our position through the snow until they were about fifty feet away. They were lead by one man in the front, wearing a navy blue uniform decorated by over a dozen small metallic insignias and badges on his chest, marking him the ranking commander of the group. To his left stood a female human wearing a suit of silvery breastplate armor over a set of royal blue robes. On his right Kati noticed the same man they saw back in Winchester that was clad in silvery-white full plate and carrying a large shield marked with a golden cross. Behind them three stood six soldiers, each of them wearing a navy-blue uniform as seen on the foreign troops encountered in the Capital City.

In the distance to the north, several columns of black troops could be seen marching down the white mountainside towards battle still raging between the two crashed ships. A number of black dracoliches could also be seen diving straight into the main battle before they were showered upon by a hailstorm of energy bolts.

While Lord Strusler finished his talk with Kati, his three cavaliers prepared to take off towards the main battle, completely ignoring the nine blue troops approaching them. The commander of the blue troops spoke out towards Strusler in an attempt to draw his attention, but the four Silver Knights took off towards the north without heed. The unknown commander then ordered his two armored subordinates, ‘Saber’ and ‘Paladin’, to eliminate Strusler’s group. A wide metallic device of sorts could be seen expanding on the back of the lightly armored female as she blasted off into the air, leaving a trail of fire and smoke. The male clad in full plate followed at a considerable slower speed, with two glowing rods shedding off yellow light attached to the armor plating on his back. The two sped straight after Strusler at breakneck speeds considerably faster than that of a Pegasus and quickly caught up to their position. The female could them be seen swerving around in midair and lets loose a swarm of metallic rods from her back, each of them leaving a trail of smoke and fire as they homed in towards Strusler and company and exploded in a storm of fire.

In the meantime, the blue commander returned his attention to Kati, Pallvara, and XAT. He announced that while he holds no ill will, the ‘Vandalians’ do not want any outside interference with their battle, and therefore it’s his task to eliminate Kati’s group. With that he extended his hand outwards and a smaller white energy-bubble engulfed his hands for a second before disappearing, leaving him armed with a large black pollaxe with its blades covered by a shimmering blue sheath of energy. His six soldiers all readied their stances, aiming towards our group with their metallic staff-like weapons tipped with bluish energy spearheads.

A furious skirmished ensued between the two groups as the blue troops pummeled our members with rapid bursts of energy from their weapons. Kati soon noticed that the energy bolts launched by their weapons seems to be a combination of fire and pure energy similar to sun-based light spells. She then proceeded to make the group members immune to their energy bolts with two mass resist energy spells.

Meanwhile, towards the north, several dracoliches could be seen joining the fight against Strusler’s group. Then sudden, a ray of brilliant golden energy descended from the heavens, followed by a spherical burst of holy fire that spread across the skies for several hundred feet. Before the fiery blast cleared, several dracoliches smolten by divine fire could be seen plummeting from the skies. One dracolich in particular could be seen evading the main blast and speeding off towards the south in our group’s direction, followed by a Silver Knight not far behind. However, with a well placed blast the lich knocked the Silver Knight off his mount and delayed his chase for a few rounds as he had to remount.

At this time Pallvara and XAT had engaged in melee with the blue troops. When XAT made a direct hit against one of the blue soldiers, he noticed that as his greatsword impacted the soldier, a screen of energy flashed above the surface of the soldier’s uniform. The energy screen felt like a thick solid barrier that XAT was barely able to overcome and cut through, but it absorbed much of the force in his blow in the process.

While the dracolich in the north closed in, a sleek navy blue ship could be seen appearing out of the horizon towards the west. The blue commander suddenly announced that their task is completed for now and broke off from his melee with Pallvara. Then all seven of them were surrounded by a white energy-bubble before disappearing from sight. Not long after the blue troops withdrew, the dracolich mounted lich had arrived at our position. With one swift strike he slashes Kati with his grafted scythe and drops her from her mount. He then went after XAT and heavily damaged the warforged before drawing his attention towards Pallvara, who had attempted to hide from the lich’s onslaught. Within three rounds he killed Pallvara with several bursts of high level necromancy magic. It was then during this time that the Silver Knight trailing him, Lord Cocoran, finally arrived and took down the lich with several powerful blows from his greatsword. The Silver Knight then proceeded to examine Pallvara and Kati’s bodies. He noticed that Kati was still alive, the proceeded to teleport her and XAT back to Winchester command center.

XP: 2,000 (Kati at 85,785xp, Pallvara at 80,925xp)

Back at the command center, XAT managed to obtain help from a Misalin high priest and revitalize Kati. Kati then noticed that she had left her Pegasus on the battlefield and teleported back to retrieve it before returning to Winchester headquarters mere minutes later.

GAME UPDATE / IN-GAME ACTION SUMMARY:

Upon returning to Winchester headquarters, Kati noticed that the place felt slightly empty in comparison to normal during this time of day. Several priests and creationists could be seen walking from one room to another, presumably working on projects they have been assigned to. However, there was not a single sign of the commanders from the paladin order, the arcane order, or the elite infantry units. After consulting several priests within the building, Kati discovered that the Lord Strusler and Lord Deoneir left the city with almost one-third of the army several hours ago this morning. However, the troop units they took with them included all of the Fist of Misalin, the elite infantry commando units, most of the mages of the Arcane Order, and a number of the Church of Misalin priests. The entire force was fully mounted. The objective was to storm Blackbog Keep, a military garrison within the Fens that was closest to the Misalin border. While the exact details are unknown, the priests heard that a hostile army forged by the barbarian tribes of the Fens are approaching Winchester and that Blackbog Keep is a strategic location that high command wishes to seize before the enemy forces arrive.

Exhausted from her last mission, Kati leaves XAT in the care of the creationists in the command center and headed off towards the barracks to take a rest. There she slept for several hours until the afternoon, when she awoke and went back out into the city. While walking about aimlessly, she talked to several infantry officers whom she had worked with before on the battlefield. Apparently the talk of the army is now focused on the details of the mission that caused high command to suddenly cross the border with one-third of the army. The officers heard that the hostile army is composed of warriors from a number of barbarian tribes from the Fens, and news just arrived yesterday that they were moving at full speed towards Blackbog Keep. It is because of this information that Strusler and Deoneir made hasty preparations overnight and left early this morning. Rumor has it that there’s something special about Blackbog Keep, something that makes it far more important than just a strategic location. Also, since the beginning of the war the garrison at Blackbog Keep has been reinforced by an elite Northend Necromancer unit. However, when the Black Lore Necromancers retreated, they took that garrison with them, significantly decreasing the Keep’s defenses. Everyone believes that taking the Keep should not be a problem. The challenge is whether they can take over the Keep and solidify their position before the enemy reinforcements arrive.

Kati tries to get information on any remaining high ranking officers within the city. One of the officers, a major of the Misalin Guard standard, told Kati that he believes most of the officers, including all of the Silver Knights, left with Strusler and Deoneir. Because of this, some serious gaps were left open in the command structure here at Winchester. However, he tells Kati that Lady Spekes is left in charge of the Winchester defense in the time being. He believes he saw her on the east wall earlier today, but then Spekes is well known for wondering around, especially to locations where troops are on duty. Kati then sent Cary a message using the communications ring. Ten minutes later, a reply message was received from Cary, asking Kati to meet her on the south wall.

Following the received directions, Kati found Cary on an empty guard tower in the south wall looking at the sunset. The two exchanged greetings and Cary thanked Kati for helping save her life. Kati asked her regarding her mission in the south and the explosion over the Whisperleaf Woods. Cary stated that the details regarding the mission are a long story. However during the time she was in those woods, a large black metallic object fell from the sky. The object was on fire and trailing smoke behind, and as soon as it impacted the forest floor it exploded in a massive burst of energy that obliterated the entire section of the forest she was in. Cary managed to survive the blast with the strongest of her defensive spells. However everyone in her mission team seems to have died as a result of the destruction. Cary also comments that her team was made of some of the strangest people: another elf from Airindale’s northern border, two pixie-ish creatures that are obviously out of this world, and a human of black skin color who has devastating destructive powers that wasn’t magical in nature. Kati questions if the black human was also the one rumored to have brought down the Durum Defender and Cary confirms this as a fact.

Due to the spell power required to maintain her defensive barrier, Cary was forced to lower it before long. By that time the destructive surge of energy has mostly dispersed, leaving the place a total wasteland. Cary tried to teleport directly into north Misalin but the attempt fails. Presuming that the northern Misalin dimensional lock as already been achieved, Cary decided to teleport close to the Ironpeak passage and make her way north from there. However, while she trekked north through the mountains, her physical condition began to rapidly deteriorate and none of her healing magic seems to help. It wasn’t long before she collapsed near the ruins of Ironpeaks and was found later by patrols from Kati’s forces.

While Cary complains that she is utterly confused and lost due to the recent events, Kati corresponds and mentions Kilar’s betrayal. Bewildered by this comment, Cary asked Kati to elaborate. After hearing the details, Cary states the she knew something was wrong with the Eyes of Misalin, but she thought it was more likely that one of Kilar’s direct subordinates had betrayed them. Because he once spent a decade undercover in Northend, Kilar has become far too trusting towards his comrades from that time. Despite her suspicions, Cary did not expect such a turn of events regarding him, although she comments that Kilar does have a habit of taking things into his own hands without consideration. However, in the current situation, Cary says she’s not sure just where Kilar’s loyalty lies.

Time passes as Kati continues to chat with Cary, exchanging their opinions regarding the sword Erylon, the off-world factions, the mission up north, and the barbarian horde. Cary then states that she hasn’t talked to Kati since the army left the Capital Defense Line and wonder if her skills have improved since then. She also mentions that although they knew each other for several years now, the two never had a sparring match to figure out each other’s caliber. Kati accepts the idea for a match between the two, and Cary mentions that the army creationists have temporary enhancements for weapons for friendly duels. The two begin to walk back towards the command center when Cary receives a message that something has happened and they want her there as soon as possible.

Kati and Cary rushes back to the headquarters structure. As soon as Kati steps up to the entry platform outside, she notices that the air was filled with the smell of fresh blood. A slight gasp came from Cary as the two walked into the entrance hall. The center of the hall was covered in a pool of blood, and a Pegasus lay dead in the middle of it. The Pegasus was missing its entire rear and its right wing. A cleanly cut wound could be seen just behind the saddle, as if showing the cross-section of the Pegasus’ flesh and internal organs. A similar wound also existed on what remains of its right shoulder. Two Misalin Guard soldiers could be seen trying to tug the Pegasus’ remains towards the front entrance by its remaining front legs, while several priests were busy casting spells to clean up the mess.

Several moments passed before one of the priests approached Cary. He managed to tell her, stuttering the entire time and constantly turning to look at the bloody mess, that the Pegasus belongs to Lady Tiriel. He says that Tiriel took extensive wounds from the battle she just returned from, but what’s worse is that her right leg seems to have suffered the same type of wound as the Pegasus. Despite this, he tells Cary that Lady Tiriel is still alive and the priests are doing their best to heal her.

Before the priest could finish explaining, Cary dashes off towards the right wing of the building with Kati trying desperately to keep up. After following the trail of blood through the hallway, Cary and Kati enter through the doors of a medical room. A large casting circle had been inscribed onto the floor of the room, its markings emitting a golden glow. Six priests are spread evenly around the circle, each of them channeling regeneration spells through the circle. In the center of the casting circle laid a simple bed, its covers already soaked with blood and a set of breastplate armor was stacked besides it. A woman in her thirties lay atop the bed, unconscious and stained with blood in every part except her upper chest and face. Her clothes were also scorched and ripped with several cuts where the armor did not fully cover. After taking a closer look at her face, Kati notices that this was the same female cavalier who arrived at the crash site of Erylon with Strusler.

Within a minute, the priests gathered around the circle finished their spell and relaxed their bearing. As the golden casting circle slowly began to fade away, the stump of Tiriel’s right leg began to slowly grow back, forming new skin and flesh along the way. One of the priests turns about and tells Cary and Kati that Lady Tiriel should be physically fine as of now. However such dire injuries could have led to significant trauma and it might take her some time to mentally recover before waking up. Cary thanks the priests for their efforts and leaves Tiriel in their care before leaving the room.

After exiting the room, Cary asks if Tiriel accompanied Lord Strusler when he arrived north at Erylon’s location. Kati confirms this, and the two wonders what could have happened up north. As the light pouring into the building becomes dimmer and the priests began to put up continual torches along the corridors, Cary states that it’s getting late and there are still some thing she need to finish today before excusing herself.

Kati decides to first heads off to the Misalin Guard supply armory, where she traded in several items for new equipment. She also brought a suit of enchanted full plate, which the creationists agreed to modify to her size and she can pick it up tomorrow. Next she went to acquire a new set of standard barding for her Pegasus, which the creationists at the armory outfitted for her. The creationists also warn Kati that since the destruction of Ironpeak, the Misalin Guard has lost their supply of Mithral plated armors. The current stock is what remains of the military stockpile from before the war, and there’s only six Pegasus mithral bardings left.

Kati then heads off to the command center to what seems to be a resource and reference room for Church of Misalin priests. The room contains numerous spell components, casting focuses, several reference prayerbooks, a number of apparatus that Kati has never seen before, and a door in the corner labeled ‘Archpriest Deoneir’. Going through the prayerbooks, Kati notices that they contain almost every divine spell known by Misalinians up to level six. She then spends several hours deciphering, learning, and copying a few spells onto her prayerbook. By the time she finished it was already around midnight, and Kati decides to head back to the barracks to take her rest.

Kati awoke the next morning at early dawn in an empty Fist of Misalin barracks and heads off to the command center. There, on the roof of the building, she sees a girl with long golden hair flowing in the morning breeze. She was sitting on the front edge of the building and dressed in simple white clothing, her features facing the rising sun to the east. Kati took her Pegasus from the stables by the command center and flew up to the roof, where she noticed that the girl was Cary. The two had a slight conversation about coffee and Kati’s days back at the Paladin academy, before silence fell between them and both took the time to enjoy the morning sun.

Time passed and the city became alive once again. The members of the Misalin Guard could be seen returning to their posts and stations. Cary suggested that they get off the roof before air walking down to the ground behind the headquarters building. Kati then rode her Pegasus back to the stables before returning to the command center, where a fully armored Cary stood waiting. She talks to Kati about the match they were planning yesterday and tells her she already talked to the creationists, who lent her an all-size scabbard that would temporarily cause any sword to deal non-lethal injuries for one hour. Also, she borrowed some spare armor and swords from the armory. Since the match is suppose to be determined by each person’s combat skill and not their equipment, neither one will be wearing any of their magic items for this match. Instead, both will be using masterwork swords and armor borrowed from the armory, although they two agreed that Kati could use her sword since it’s a special case of self-enhancement. The two scheduled the match to be at the east city square in one hour.

An hour later, Kati and Cary meets up at the Winchester east city square. The buildings surrounding the square are still in ruins and rubble have accumulated on the edges of the open plaza. However the center of the square was a large open clearing free of debris. The two puts their equipment away in an alarm-secured chest Cary brought, and then fastened themselves into two suits of non-magical armor. Nine swords, including eight masterwork longswords from Cary, were put into the scabbard and be enhanced to deal non-lethal injuries. By this time a number of spectators arrived and took positions around the square. Somehow news of two high ranking officers having a dueling match spread around and off-duty soldiers came to take a glimpse of the action.

The two proceeded to take their positions and began the match. In the first few rounds, both Cary and Kati took defensive stances and powered up using divine spells. Kati then made herself larger by casting righteous might and charged Cary directly. In the next few seconds, Kati hit Cary with three critical strikes with her gargantuan sixteen-foot long sword. However, Cary retaliated with two sword-flurrying pouncing charges, which knocked Kati out.

After the duel, Cary revitalized Kati with healing magic and the two reequipped themselves with their normal gear. Cary then returned to the command center in order to return the scabbard and check up on any new developments. Kati left for the west side of town, where she found a sturdy stone building kept mostly intact in a desolate portion of the city. She then secluded herself within the building and began the 24 hour long ritual to enhance her signature sword. About four hours later, Kati received a message that requested all high ranking officers of the Misalin Guard within the city to report to the command center for a ‘debriefing’ of current situation regarding Blackbog Keep. After hesitating for several minutes, Kati decided to interrupt the ritual and began heading back to the command center.

As the City Square came into view, Kati was shocked by its change since a few hours ago. The present City Square was filled with priests running about and treating injured troops, many of whom were lying in animated self-levitating stretchers. It was nearing noontime and several tents have been set up to provide cover over those in the City Square. Four ‘barracks’ buildings near the square are also used as temporary hospitals to accommodate the injured troops.

Passing through the City Square, Kati continued into the command center and headed straight to the first floor main briefing room. After knocking, Kati let herself into the room. The briefing room was spacious and well lit, occupied by a single large elliptical table and surrounded by twenty chairs. Twelve of these chairs have already been filled by regimental and special forces commanders from the various factions. Some of them look mentally exhausted and their armor marked with damaged and bloody areas where recent wounds were sustained and healed.

Directly across the room sat Lady Tiriel herself, who appears to have made a full recovery from her dire wounds. She was a woman in her thirties and fully clad in a set of mithral plate armor that looks slightly too large for her. She has a slightly long face with short loose brown hair that barely touches her shoulders. Her face was pale, stern, and marked by a pair of dim cyan eyes. A gloomy mood could be seen in her features along with every other person sitting in this room. To her left sat Lady Spekes, while to her right sat two High Priests of the Church.

After Kati’s entrance, every head in the room quieted down and turned toward Kati’s direction. Lady Tiriel then became the first to speak.

“Lady Gant, good work on your mission in the Northern wastelands. Please take a seat while we’re waiting for the arrival of remaining commanders.”

Kati then took her seat on the right side of the table. In less than five minutes, the remaining six regimental infantry commanders have arrived at the table and Lady Tiriel began the meeting.

“In the absence of the High Archpriest Callis Deoneir, High Commander Kosai Strusler, High Crusader Adret Corcoran, and High Marshal Malayar Salim, I, Escort Crusader Lenneth Tiriel, will be taking command of the Misalin Guard until further notice.”

“This debriefing is to give a detailed report of the present military situation to all commanders. As we all know, four days ago a skyship of unknown origin descended upon the Capital City during our battle against the Northend forces that have managed to infiltrate our rear. The winged beings of this ship, known as the forces of the ‘Sacred Kingdom’ as per intelligence gathered by Lady Gant, infiltrated the White Keep and stole Erylon, the sacred artifact of our Theocracy. In order to recover Erylon, High Archpriest Deoneir managed to discern its general location in the Northern wastelands of the Fens and three reconnaissance teams were dispatched to determine its exact position. Thanks to the work of Lady Gant and her team, we managed to pinpoint Erylon. Lord Strusler, Lord Corcoran, Lord Salim, and I attempted a swift recovery. However, the battle did not go in our favor.”

“We detected Erylon inside the crashed remains of the Sacred Kingdom skyship. However its location was heavily defended by the surviving crew of the ship and under attack from a contingent of purple constructs similar to those reported attacking Naralan and several companies of necromancers from Northend. Our efforts were also frustrated by Northend Liches and battle commanders from the Navy-blue forces we encountered in Capital City. While Lord Salim and I kept those attempting to thwart us at bay, Lord Corcoran and Strusler assaulted the enemy skyship. However, during this time a smaller purple ship dived down from the skies and fired a column of white light upon the crashed ship, which burst upon impact into a sphere of light. I managed to survive the attack and recall back to headquarters since I was near the outer regions of this white sphere. However since then we have yet to hear any news from the other three and our divination spells also failed to discern their location, therefore we have no choice but to assume their death.”

It was in this moment, the worst fear of all the commanders around the table have been confirmed. Some of them sat looking dazed, while others began murmuring to each other. Meanwhile, Lady Tiriel continued her explanation.

“Earlier today, High Priest Anstrun managed to divine an image of the battle site.” Lady Tiriel then nodded to the High Priest two seats to her right. He was a man above his sixties, with lengthy white hair reaching down his neck. He had a wide face covered in wrinkles and marked with a rather large downward-bending nose. His turquoise eyes appeared rather dull behind the pair of half-moon spectacles with mithral frames, revealing both the wisdom and weariness of his years. Wearing priestly robes adorned with gold trimming and a round flat-top cleric cap, he stood up and placed an illusion projector onto the table. The magic device was a fist-sized water opal orb with its lower hemisphere seated within a rectangular wooden stand, while a tiny star ruby orb could be seen embedded in the middle of its upper hemisphere. Anstrun then muttered softly and activated the device, which projected the miniature image of the crash site. However, while a violet ship could be seen towards the east, surrounded by a number of constructs, only a large ‘crater’ could be seen where the white Sacred Kingdom ship should be. The ‘crater’ also had no rings and no surrounding debris, as if a half-sphere piece of land was taken away without interrupting the adjacent soil. It was obviously not the result of an explosion.

“We’ve already confirmed that the image displayed here was not altered by any illusion screening effects,” continued Lady Tiriel. “It would appear that the white sphere disintegrated everything within its area of effect. Because of this, we have no choice but to presume that Erylon has also been destroyed for the time being.”

It was dreadful news, one stacked upon another. While few knew of Erylon’s existence, the very thought of destroying a relic of the gods was appalling. Surely divine punishment would not only befall those responsible, but also those who failed in their task to guard the artifact. Yet, after all the recent events, it was questionable if the deities had forsaken Misalin… once again.

“We do believe this to be false,” said High Priest Anstrun, “Erylon is not so physical an object such that it could be obliterated by a mere disintegration attack. If I recall correctly, Callis once mentioned that Erylon was more of an inter-dimensional anomaly bound to a physical anchor. However, the only people who know about exact details of Erylon’s properties are Lord Strusler and Lord Deoneir. Without their knowledge, it would take our priests some time to recover the history behind this relic, information hidden within the archives of the White Keep. However, that time is a resource we currently do not have.”

Lord Anstrun then returned the attention to Lady Tiriel, who began to explain. “All of you know that a combined force of all mounted troops was hastily assembled two nights ago and sped towards Blackbog Keep at full speed. The reason is that we received intelligence two days ago that several barbarian clans of the Fens that withdrew their mercenary troops since the conquest of Airindale has began to band together in forming a new army. Their convergence point has been identified to be Blackbog Keep, and thus we could only make one conclusion: their objective is to conquer Misalin before we can begin recovering from our war with Northend.”

“Currently, the barbarian clans that assisted Northend in conquest of Archeron have moved there from the Fens and taken residence with those lands. Because of this, we believe that one of Northend’s deals in obtaining the aid of the various clans was to offer them conquered lands them as a better alternative to the territories of the Fens, land that was scorched by the devastating epic magic utilized during the first Alliance War. However, due to the widespread use of despoiling spells by Northend in Airindale, the land and forests have been corrupted and no longer remain a suitable place to live. Thus, it appears that those clans have laid their eyes upon our lands.”

“Blackbog Keep is an ancient bastion first built by the elves to guard against Misalin. It remains as one of the few structures that managed to survive the epic spells that wiped out half the continent. Over the years the damaged Keep was repaired by orcish and goblin garrisons from the Fens, and it became the only route to enter Misalin through the Black Marshes of southwestern Fens. While most of the defensive spells and arcane weaponry have been destroyed, two of its most powerful defensive abilities still function. First, it maintains a dimensional lock over a region of fifty mile radius surrounding it. This dimensional lock also snares planar travelers and forces them into the material plane. Second, the keep is capable of generating a solid fog cloud over the fifty mile radius region, making it nearly impossible for an army to move across it.”

“Because of its capabilities and the light garrison left behind after the Northend withdraw, Lord Strusler and Deoneir decided to seize control of the Keep and fight on its grounds, where movement of enemy troops will be severely hampered and their acid-cold offensive magic will be no match against the fire-light spells of our warmages. Our scouts and diviners also ascertained that the bulk of the barbarian forces were at least five days away from Blackbog Keep, and only the red dragonlancer units from the Ghorkel clan would be able to arrive ahead of our troops.”

“During our gallop to Blackbog, we received message from Lady Gant in successfully locating Erylon. Because of this, Lord Strusler, Lord Corcoran, Lord Salim, and I left the army to Archpriest Deoneir, High Priestess Spennar, and the Silver Knights Lord Rothir and Lord Kovis.” Lady Tiriel then turned her head towards a paladin seated left of Lady Spekes and nodded.

The paladin, clad in a heavily scorched and damaged suit of mithral full plating, stood up slowly. A young man in his late twenties, he was easily six foot tall with broad shoulders and a powerful build. He has spiky grey hair, a well-proportioned handsome face, and a pair of green eyes that gave off an eerie feeling. “Colonel Tollak Kovis, commander of the fifteen Fist of Misalin regiment,” he introduced himself. “Our forces arrived at Blackbog Keep at four in the afternoon and initiated combat as planned. The aerial cavalry quickly engaged the fifty Ghorkel red dragonlancers while the warmages and warpriests bombarded the garrison and shattered the western gate. The first wave of cavaliers then charged into the gate to engage the orcish infantry within. However, we did not realize that their ranks were boosted by several dozen draconic sorcerers from the Deadeye clan. They stopped the charge by ensnaring our cavalry in web spells and began tearing through the trapped cavaliers with throwing axes and draconic breaths. At the same time, enormous monsters of various types rushed out of the south gate and charged our forces.”

“The Deadeye clan and their infamous capability to enslave some the most powerful beasts of the world and utilize them for battle,” commented Lady Spekes.

“Yes. We anticipated the possibility of meeting them in combat due to the rapid movement speed of these mages. However, we greatly underestimated their monsters, especially since our smiting attacks were proven ineffective against many of them. While most of the monsters were taken down with focused charges by small groups of cavaliers, a few of them proved to be especially deadly and managed to trample through rows of cavalry and into the warmage and warpriest units.”

“After the enemy pierced our center column, the warmage and warpriest units fell into disarray and began blasting away at the monsters with offensive spells. The mounted infantry at the rear then charged into combat to support the mages but caused only more confusion. The disorderly units severely hindered the engaging cavalry and caused our center formations to collapse upon each other. At this time, about fifty ogre hurlers from the Thokk clan flew in from the north.”

“Flew?” questioned Lady Spekes, bewildered along with most of the people sitting around the table.

“Yes,” responded Lord Kovis, “it appears that the arcane support capabilities of the various clans have improved far beyond our expectations. The last known location of the Thokk clan before the battle was divined to be over a hundred twenty miles to the northeast. Even if they teleported to the edge of the Blackbog defensive zone, it would take them over twelve hours to reach the Keep. Their haste in reaching the Keep in time shows us that this army is not a mere simple band of primitives and has shown much higher capabilities than the combined armies we encountered in Highrez.”

“As the ogre hurlers began throwing their rocks into our disorganized center, Major Zomeg took his north guard of two banners and charged the ogre units. The charge succeeded in reaching the Thokk rows but incurred crippling losses due to the lack of ranged fire support. Major Tifel then followed by taking his two banners in the south around our rear to engage the Thokk clan towards the north. However, at this time, the garrison of orcish infantry and draconic mages have completely decimated our first wave and charged out of the Keep into our center, with additional undead bolstering their ranks. Also, many of the troops slain on the battlefield began rising as zombies or wights. It would seem that the orcish mages have been adapting advanced Northend necromancy sorceries.”

“With battlefield control lost and our center on the threshold of routing, Lord Deoneir ordered a general withdraw. But at this point, the center units of warmages, warpriests, mounted infantry, and cavaliers were in utter disarray and completely entangled in close combat with the enemy. With units disorganized and the command chain broken up, they were incapable of mounting an effective defense and were overrun.”

“Lord Deoneir attempted to hold back the enemy attack but was killed by the last of the enemy monsters. It was the only monster our troops failed to dispatch, a spiderlike monster over forty feet tall with eight legs, six reaching jaws, and three claws. Lady Spennar was lost in the confusion and presumable died in the onslaught. Lord Rothir was slain by the Ghorkel chieftain in the aerial combat earlier in the battle. Out of the two thousand troops dispatched, less than four hundred managed to pull out and return safely.”

“What about the enemy?” questioned Lady Tiriel.

“We managed to kill all of the enemy dragonlancers and most of their ogre hurlers. The orcish garrison and draconic sorcerers also took heavy casualties from the melee. The warriors of the Ghorkel clan, the Deadeye clan, and the Thokk clan form the most combat effective units in the enemy army. Their losses should severely weaken the enemy’s offensive capabilities. However, the losses incurred by the enemy are nowhere as devastating as that of our forces.”

After presenting his summary of the disastrous battle, Lord Kovis sat back down in his seat, returning the room’s focus back to Lady Tiriel.

“While we speak, the opposing army continues to gather at Blackbog Keep. They should be finished assembling within four days, and another two days to reach Winchester. Therefore, we must organize the defense of Winchester and prepare for battle within six days.”

“In light of the recent events, our chain of command has been severely crippled by losses. At this moment, I, Escort Crusader Tiriel, the fifth in command of the Misalin Guard, will take the position of High Commander. Colonel Kovis will lead the remaining Fist of Misalin as High Crusader. Escort Marshal Spekes will take command of the Misalin Guard infantry as High Marshal. Major Gant is promoted to Colonel and will lead our special forces as Escort Marshal. We will proceed to replenish all command posts within the individual regiments within the next two days.”

“This morning I have sent word to all guard units posted along the Ironforge mountain range and patrol units in the northern countryside to march toward Winchester at maximum speed. We have also successfully negotiated for the dwarves of Stormguard to take over the defense of Ironpeak passage in our stead. High Priest Anstrun, High Priest Sirimel, once High Priest Sellis returns from Ironpeak, please elect amongst yourselves the next High Archpriest to oversee civilian and church affairs in Misalin.”

“Also, due to their repeated failures in the war and their actions in the northern wastelands, the allegiance of the entire Eyes of Misalin intelligence department is in doubt. Therefore, today I officially disband the Eyes of Misalin. All personnel under the Eyes of Misalin are to be distributed amongst the various regiments. All scouting missions from now on will be taken upon by the Misalin Guard Elite under command of Colonel Gant.”

Much of the room was unclear what to make of the last announcement. Many of regimental commanders were left in complete shock. While most of the army wish the intelligent unit reformed due to their incompetence and many suspected spies within the organization, none had thought of a possibility of that the Eyes of Misalin might be working for the enemy as a whole. After all, the very notion of it was horrifying. Surely the army would have been eradicated long ago if their information was completely fed to them by the enemy.

“With that said, I’d like to remind you all that the upcoming battle will decide the fate of Misalin,” said Lady Tiriel in a stern and imperative tone as she drew the attention of the room back to the briefing. “The few defensive units left within Capital City were devastated during their last fight with the Northend forces that infiltrated our rear. Thus if we lose this battle, the orcs will march straight to the capital and what remains of our defenses will be powerless to stop them. However, with the withdraw of the Northend legions, this army of savages is also our last barrier to securing and restoring the nation. Therefore it is essential that we put forth all efforts in winning this decisive battle.”

Pausing a few seconds after her words, Lady Tiriel scanned about the room at the expressions of the various officers. After hearing the reports of two demoralizing defeats along with the death of almost all of high command within the past hour, it was impossible for any officer to keep an optimistic face. Surely, outside the room at this precise moment, news of the crippling defeat at Blackbog Keep and rumors of Lord Strusler’s death have traveled through every rank and file within the army. Even in the darkest hours during this war, the Silver Knights provided hope and optimism to the Misalin Guard. Yet, in this hour, their very ranks were reduced to merely three members while their founder, the Saint Guardian of Misalin, was presumably slain. To the mind of a common soldier, it was unthinkable of what horrid power could kill a saint blessed by celestia.

In this hour, it was questionable if the morale of the army could sink any lower.

“Lady Spekes, please present the overview of our defenses.”

(The last three posts were categorized into a single "game update" and this concludes the part... what can I say, had to write a concluding part.)

GAME UPDATE:

Standing up from her chair, Lady Spekes raises her illusion projector and sets it down in the middle of the table. “Light,” she said softly before letting go of the darkwood projector base. The embedded star ruby then began glow, projecting light which was reshaped by the water opal orb to form a miniature illusional replica of the city of Winchester and its surrounding area. The image then began to rotate slowly in the clockwise direction, while maintaining its position just above the magical device.

Cary then drew her communication rod and with a slight tap to her right hand, the rod extended to triple its length. She then began her explanation while holding her rod at the described locations on the illusional map.

“Since our arrival at Winchester fifteen days ago, we have finished most of our efforts in fortifying our position within the city. The stone wall surrounding the city has been fully repaired and raised to thirty-feet tall. The steel gates have been repaired and magically hardened. The guard towers have also been finished and one light catapult has been fixed to each of the towers on the eastern half city. Two berms alternating with two trenches have been constructed fifty-feet away from the city walls, extending from the east gate to both the north and south gate. Also, two layers of stone fraise have been erected within twenty-five feet of the north, east, and south gates to defend against a direct charge.”

“In magical defenses, the priests and creationists have completed two three-by-one mile long zones of scattered perimeter-activated holy storm spellglyphs stretching north-south to both north and south of Winchester. These two regions should deal significant damage to any infantry force attempting to maneuver to our rear. Holy storm spellglyphs have also been scattered outside the walls of the eastern half city, while firebrand spellglyphs have been fixed to all four gates. Animated rolling stone pillars that were hollowed out and filled with holy oil have been prepared at each gate and the four major streets inside the city. Also, the outside perimeter of the city walls has been warded with an alarm spell. Finally, the city walls, the four major streets, and the city center have been hallowed and linked with death ward spells.”

“Currently, eight Misalin Guard regiments, three elite longbow companies, two warpriest companies, two warmage companies, and one war-wizard company are positioned within the city. We also have auxiliary support of more than two hundred mages and priests from the arcane order, the guild, and the church. Two Misalin Guard regiments recalled from Durum Keep, one Fist of Misalin banner and two Misalin Guard companies from Ironpeak, and three Misalin Guard Elite companies from the northern plains are en-route to Winchester and expected to arrive within two to four days. We also expect to reform two Fist of Misalin banners and one Misalin Guard Elite company from those that retreated from Blackbog Keep.”

Hasn't been updates last few days since I'm not technically at home...

Also, deleted the part about setting up teleportation circles to each of the gates. It seems to have slipped my mind that Winchester is also under dimensional Lock.
