(In the interests of incentivizing you folks to prepare more, I added alchemicals to the list of items that Lysette will give you discounts for)
So... 75% market value for them. Get your quartermaster to take care of it =P

Gorin studies the maps. The route has the usual terrain for Stormreach's surroundings -- low rolling hills with intermixed patches of jungles and plains. The tropical climates means all terrain off the few dirt roads features undergrowth (rough terrain, counts as concealment). There are also no reports of Xen'drik's hectic "shifting zones" this close to Stormreach.

( do you wish to look for / hire a forest guide? or advance with the mission? )

Gorin feels confident that he can handle navigation.

Koko feels lost and out of her depth, so goes to talk to Goodberry to ask if there is something she should bring before going to Leah to ask what she should wear. Or perhaps the reverse, who can say.

Goodberry's shopping list includes the following (to be distributed among the 6 members of the party):
20 vials of Antitoxin
3 compasses
2 sextants
2 maps of the area around stormreach
2 maps of the area around the mining facility
10 empty vials/flasks for seed/dirt/leaf samples
2 machette (for vines/undergrowth)
2 spools of 200ft each bright sturdy ribbon (for tying to branches/trees to mark a path)
200ft strong rope
3 climbing kits (so we don't have to burn fly spells to scout from treetops)

He also recommends someone who is able to cast the spell pick up 2+ scrolls of Alarm, and possibly reserve 1 slot a day for it.

Being relatively unfamiliar with Dragonshards, he suggests that they look for anything that might act as a dowsing rod for them. If they're magnetic, or show up on detect magic, or however they might be tracked/detected would help.

Adoett also gets 10 empty vials of his own for potential ingredients.

Goodberry easily buys most of those supplies, including the Scrolls of Alarm.
- You find 2 maps of the Stormreach vicinity sold for 5gps apieces.
- Kurn has 2 maps of the mining facility copied and given to you
- use normal price for all other things... use Sickle price for Machette if need be.

(I suggest getting edit perms for the party ledger from Sajuuk, if you don't have it already)

The party does their shopping in the morning and sets off after lunch on February 16th...

(Give me your marching order + 10 Survival checks for navigation please; you get Advantage from the compass and... another Advantage on the first 5 from the map xD).
(also make me 2 Knowledge[nature] checks)

Since he's tracking and has well enough senses, Gorin takes the lead position of the pack.

Adoett takes second, helping clear space with a machete when necessary.

Goodberry takes last in order to send out sharp mental "STOP!" or "DON'T" if anyone is about to touch something they shouldn't.

( marching order: Gorin > Adoett > Ahz > Koko > Leah > Goodberry; speak up if you want to shift )

With map and compass in hand, Gorin leads the party from Stormreach without any issue. The terrain in the city's vicinity is also quite flat, and the dirt trail -- if it could even be called that -- takes a path that leaves it clear of forests on at least one side.

...At least until 8 miles out.

The forests grew thicker and became more jungle-like, with dense undergrowth that makes it hard to walk as soon as one steps in. The 'dirt road' also vanished into the overgrown grass for entire miles at a time, and even the clearing grew narrow at points when the trees closed in from both sides to form bottlenecks.

Gorin and Goodberry soon began to spot the presence of poisonous ivy and flowers in the undergrowth. There was even the occassional carnivorous flower in the jungle, although nothing big enough to threaten humans yet.

Then, at 12 miles away from the city, the road took a sharp bend towards the north. Here, Gorin smelled the awful stench before he even spotted the first sign of trouble. From a good distance away, he soon spotted bodies up on the road ahead just as it turned -- not just humanoid corpses, but also the pack animals pulling the wagon train.

There were three wagons in total. The first one had two mounted repeating-ballistae and built with iron plating on the sides, clearly an escort. The other two were open-top cargo wagons, one of them slanted (probably from a broken wheel/axel). All three wagons were peppered with arrows. Two giant jungle trees, recently felled, also blocked the road to either side.

It was a classic ambush, and whoever did it didn't even bother trying to hide it.

( Praetorian: if Wild Instincts is a daily buff, I highly recommend adding a note about it in your Passives table )

Before examining the scene itself, Gorin is going to scout out the parameter, including the downed trees, so as to see if he can figure what ambushed the caravan.

Gorin scouts out the perimeter rather noisily (you really need stealth xD)

Luckily, whomever ambushed this supply group did not seem to leave anyone behind. Going about the perimeter of the battle, Gorin could notice the following things:

(1) the trees were hacked into by an axe until it was on the verge of tipping, then blasted by weak sonic magic to topple them.

(2) despite the ambush, the battle was vicious. There was even a lot of blood on one tree, and near it was a discarded ballista bolt from the escort that clearly penetrated someone -- although the body, dead or alive, was now gone. One thing did remain though -- a discarded vial that looked like it was once used to hold poison.

(3) it took a while but... Gorin soon realized that there were TWO patterns of tracks which denoted TWO separate encounters. Those from the first battle occurred over 10 days ago and involved at least a dozen ambushers, but most of their tracks were faded. However, it seems some days ago -- maybe as much as a week? -- a second skirmish took place here, with far less people. However, looking at the supply train, all the corpses there had been decaying for over a week already -- which mean that the second fight left no bodies...

(4) That was wrong. There was trails on the ground left by bodies being dragged off into the distance. The footsteps accompanying them seem to suggest the second skirmish.

Leah gives the whole place a look-over, supported with , checking for anything really. Probably magic items, seeing how much time must have passed since the assault, but it never hurts to check.

GM: No magical aura remaining. Any magic items have been stripped clean.

Goodberry and Adoett keep an eye on the perimeter while the investigators investigate.

Goodberry Perception: 13+8 = 21
Adoett Perception : 6+12 = 18

Gorin notices the following from the battle site itself...

(1) As mentioned before, there are three wagons, with about 5 drivers/laborers and 8 guards -- many of them gnolls. The bodies have been rotting for well over a week in the winter(mild)-tropical weather... the smell is atrocious and the insects swarming.

(2) Some of the guards' feet are literally half-buried into the ground. Some kind of earth-transmutation field control spell had been used here.

(3) The attackers overwhelmingly preferred the bow. There are dozens of arrows sticking out of the ground and the carriages. Many of them tipped with poison. In fact, Gorin couldn't even find any signs of melee combat, except... some of the guards had their throats slit, which would denote that they were knocked unconscious first (possibly by poison).

(4) Gorin then finds something odd -- a piece of cloth with House Deneith markings. Doesn't seem to belong to any of the people who were ambushed. There were signs of a body being dragged off right beside it though.

When sharing #2 and #3 with the party, Ahz easily recognizes this as standard drow tactics (or someone imitating them).
