He woke up with a particularly bad feeling, one that he hadn't felt for over a month.

He was at another mountain temple. Another very bloodied temple, with 'freshly' killed monks strewn across the open courtyard. Signs of necromancy were apparent, and upon a simple check Yuuta could find no traces of the Mark of Justice that was inscribed upon him...

The distance he was looking down into the courtyard indicated he was on the second floor of... probably some pagoda given the internal layout. It was dawn, and the sun was just barely coming up over the horizon. In the distance, maybe about two miles away, he could see the very town he stayed at the other night--- as well as the Miko Institute's main temple above it. It would seem the place he attacked was on a separate mountain-top...

He also felt exhausted. His other self must have had a busy night... in fact given the time since the last time 'he' surfaced, it might have been well over a night.

( Anything you couldn't carry without getting in the way... probably just that ninja's armor, just got left behind in the Inn )

Putting his bowl back down, he had apparently gulped down his food before Yuuta even realized it. He then put down some silver pieces next to it as payment for the food and stood up to head out...
"Well, I'll be on my way. Was nice talking to you, and good luck."

( btw, what are you planning to do with the loot? or just carry it about for now? )

Yuuta continues his journey to the next town without incident. In fact, the next few days went fine, and nothing suspicious happened until Yuuta reached the base of the mountains in Yamatai (November 21st). There, as he stopped by an Inn for a light meal, a local walked up to his table...

"Don't mind if I sit here? It's a little crowded." In fact he had sat down casually before Yuuta could answer. "So what brings you to Yamatai?"

Yuuta could also feel the barkeep's eyes distinctively focusing on him.

Lord of Shadows: As long as Keishoushin is emanating darkness, you may slash at the air to send out a wave of shadowstuff to strike the enemy. Your effective reach with Keishoushin increases by +5ft (although you continue to threaten adjacent squares), but you only threaten targets that are engulfed within the Embrace the Darkness effect.

Still clutching the wound, the leader ordered them to back out further, to a distance of 60ft away as they kept their vigilance with readied weapons. Meanwhile the caster tried to dispel the darkness effect, but failed.

The Black Tentacles wasn't very effective...

[XP +500]

He wasn't nearly as successful in Gifu castle-town, however. Maybe the locals just didn't fit him as well, because he also had more trouble getting travel information there than usual --- to the point that the next town he found himself in was on the road to the capital Kyoto rather than Yamatai. Thankfully, some chatting with a helpful innkeeper corrected his path. He probably got delayed by only a day.

(...)

[November 19th, Mid-Morning]

Several hours after setting off for the next town, in a lightly wooded path, Yuuta came under sudden attack as a crossbow bolt shot out from the trees --- piercing through his armor right under the left collarbone before he could even react. Yuuta did however, manage to spot the attacker before he could duck back under the bushes: the target was 80ft away, 40ft off the road, and holding a heavy crossbow. In a moment of adrenaline-heightened senses, Yuuta also spots three other ninjas, except 20ft closer and probably not as skilled if they were discovered without even exposing themselves with a weapon shot.

( Yuuta takes 56 piercing damage and need to make 2 fortitude saves: vs death effect and vs poison )
( at the same time, make a Will save as you feel someone attempt to pull information from you head with excessive force... )
( also, initiative check )

Getting there, Part I:
1. How is Yuuta dressed during these travels? Are you bringing food or stopping by along the way?

2. The road there have been badly ravaged by war, including all the road signs and markings. You'll either need drop by the major towns you pass along the way (Diplomacy to Gather Information x 5) or try to guide yourself through the region (Survival x 3); also give me Perception checks x 5. Several of the castle-towns you pass by will be quite large, including the formidable in Mino currently ruled by the Oda, if you wish to collect information / spread information / shop / etc.

Yuuta was pushed into a cart by the surging crowd and instead of stumbling over, he flipped over it by instinct, retaining his footing but drawing the attention of another patrol squad that was sorting its way through the crowd (~40ft away)... the samurai office leading the group yells at Yuuta to stop while two of the archers took aim, even though some civilians are still rushing by in panick.

As all the nearby people are busy running away from Yuuta's position, he manages to make his way into a nearby alley without any issues, and far before either of those squads make it to his position.

Yuuta feels dizzy for a second and feels like the last of his strength was leaving him, but he just barely manages to pull it together. He also notices a heavy crossbow pulling into the shadows in a 2nd floor window two stores down the street, maybe around ~40ft to the south...

The squad of soldiers are around ~60ft south and steadily marching forward (at only ~30ft/rnd since most of the people are fleeing that way; it's toward the castle). You also notice a second squad turning the corner near the edge of town at around 100ft north.

Just as Yuuta was leaving one tavern for a different location, a crossbow bolt flew out from the other side of the street. His instantaneous shift to the side had saved his neck (literally), but the bolt still struck deep between his shoulders and his collarbone...
( Yuuta takes 46 piercing damage )
[ Make a Fortitude save against a death effect ]
[ also make a perception check, and an initiative roll... ]

It was obvious the moment pain struck that this was an assassination attempt on his life, and it only took a few seconds before his blood caused the nearby commoners to go into a panick, while the nearest patrol down the street --- six ashigaru lead by a human samurai, was headed right for him where the commotion was coming from, although it'll take them a little more time since the soldiers didn't intend to cut a path with their weapons and simply brandished their blades as they walked steadily forward, relying on the sharp edge of steel to encourage panicked people to get out of the way.

"That's exactly it," Taira responded, a worrisome expression on his face as he looked at the blade, "it's the treasure of the Iga house ninjas, except that the Iga house are the ninjas--- not only are they the best in Japan, but many ninjas of the other clans also look up to them. Should word of the sword's whereabouts get out, there would no doubt be those who seek its power, glory, and prestige for themselves. In fact, the Iga would probably take it as a personal affront should they find out that their heirloom weapon is in the hands of their enemies."

Keishoushin, Blade of the Shadowlord (Minor Artifact)
Description: A simple-looking short-sword with a pitch-black blade and dark-purple cords wrapped around the grip. The black substance surrounding the blade seems to empower the blade in darkness, but it dissolves under daylight, revealing a keen mithral edge. Once a treasure of the Iga clan ninjas, Keishoushin was captured when their top assassin was cornered and killed after assassinating the previous Lord Tougou, since then all news of the blade vanished into the chaotic coup that spelled the end of the Tougou house; should news of this blade's resurgence reach the Iga's ears, it would undoubtly bring assassins seeking to recover it down upon the wielder.
Caster Level: 15th
Weapon: +3 Mithral Short-Sword
Bonuses:
Umbral Edge: In shadowy illumination or darker, Keishoushin inflicts +2d6 damage and all damage dealt is considered magical.
Embrace the Darkness: Keishoushin may emanate a 20ft-radius magical shadowy effect like that of a Darkness spell. This may be deactivated or reactivated as a swift action. As a swift action (or part of its activation), the wielder may expend 1 ki point or a 2nd level spell slot to enhance the effect to that of Deeper Darkness instead for 1 minute per charisma modifier.
Lord of Shadows: (failed to identify)

It was after the end of the mission-4 briefing [], just as everyone else was leaving, when Yuuta felt a magically conveyed Message (as the cantrip) bring Taira's words to his ears: "Yuuta, a minute please."

The old man moved to close the doors after everyone else's departure, before he walked back to the side of the room where he sat, and picked up a long wooden box from the desk by the wall.

He coughed several times as he sat back down; maybe that meeting was a bit too much talking for him.

"There's something I want to give you before you depart. You may find it--- useful, should certain problems arise."

He unwrapped the cords tightened around the box and opened it, revealing a delicately packaged but rather simple-looking short-sword with dark-purple cords wrapped around the grip.

"This is Keishoushin, treasured blade of the Iga clan ninjas, and the sword that took the life of the last Lord of Tougou. The assassin who did the deed had been killed before he could escape, although not without claiming the lives of dozens of our ninjas and special operatives---" Taira's gaze shifted to look straight into Yuuta's eyes, a trace of haunting still within them, "---including a number of your old comrades. The blade is well known by the Iga clan and, since the incident, also by many within our own. But its fate was lost to history when we fled to the Death Lands. It's a bit double-edged, but I think, when used properly by someone of your talents, it's powers should prove a valuable boon."

It was the morning of October 19th, and Yuuta was helping Todoroki and the rest of the group build housing outside the castle when someone called out "Yuuta! someone's here to see you!"

After Yuuta emerges from the large, half-built wooden cabin, a rather elderly man waves his hand towards him in greeting from the nearby dirt road. He was wearing the white uniform of a Tougou military officer and carried a katana, although the walking stick he was leaning heavily on didn't make him very fit for combat. As Yuuta headed over, he began to notice recognize, just barely--- it was Taira Eichi, the old commander of the Tougou special ops units. Yuuta didn't serve under him directly, but he's seen the man a few times. It was only several years ago, but one look at Eichi's wrinkly face, his salt-and-pepper hair, or his noticeably hunched-over back would claim that the man must have aged more than two decades... it seems the stories were right and the Death Lands really took its toll on him.

"Yuuta Rokuro, I presume?" Taira said as Yuuta approached. Even his voice sounded old, with a bit of wheezing in it. "I apologize. It's been a long time since I've met anyone who once served under me, let alone someone not of my direct command. Your commander was one of our betters; it's a shame he and almost all of his men were killed during the Coup."

The monk agrees and tucks back in for resting again. Meanwhile, the miko asks Yuuta to come outside to help with something. Once they were out with a little distance from the house, she turns around, still rather expressionless but with a hint of curiosity in her eyes, she asks Yuuta quietly: "You're possessed, aren't you?"

The monk seems to accept Yuuta's explanations after some consideration, although he's still very wary towards Yuuta. He then shifts to a formal sitting position on the bed. "In any case, thank you for saving my life, both of you," he said while bowing deeply.

(That's a bit odd, because if she was once a miko, given her uniform, she'd have been trained as a healer before).

She led you inside to the bed, where the unconscious monk lays. He was badly wounded by a shortsword stab, but is now in a stable condition and recovering.

Yuuta searches around the temple, finding the bodies of 19 monks, all of them brutally murdered and not a single one still alive. He also finds 2 miko dead just outside the gateway and on the stone steps down from the mountain--- who appears to have come bearing food for the temple and walked straight into the bloodbath.

There was also a trail of blood drips that went out of the temple gate and into the woods.
