Shigeru goes about the task of preparing a pyre for the three, more out of a respect for the dead than the fact that the berserker told him to. As he gets the bodies in position, he examines them to see if he can find more information about who, or what, killed them.

(Heal Check to get more info about what killed them: )
(Spellcraft check (trying to figure out what killed them): )

( Dave: tracking check )

Katsurou's and the two brothers' equipment include: 482gps (split 4ways for 120 each), masterwork glaive, +1 katana, katana, mwk longspear x2, breastplate x2, heavy shields x2, silver pocketwatch (from the gate battle), and a drawing looted from the keep ("highly-detailed drawing made from multicolored ink; it depicts some high-ranking Hojo mage with a 3-dimensional map of the Shikoku region right in front of him."). Of course, all three have your generic adventurer's gear set.

"Yumi, Yuuta, see if you can find any tracks in the area. Whoever did this was here only a few hours ago, and came right into our camp. If we move fast, we might be able to overtake them. Shigeru, while they're searching set up a funeral pyre."

Terasaka then begins looking through Katsurou's pack.

The party takes a break and then began backtracking towards the Death Land Gatehouse...

...

For the rest of the day, as well as the day afterwards, everything went normally. The group came across neither monsters nor new tracks. Then, as the party camped out as usual on the night of Oct 10 and slept...

It was nearly morning when everybody had been awoken by a scream. It came from Yumi, and the young but experienced hunter/guide who was usually calm and collected looked extremely distressed. The reason soon became apparent as neither Katsurou nor Daichi/Daisuke stood up. Katsurou was still in his bedroll, despite the last hour being his watch, and Daichi/Daisuke were sitting on a log back to back, both slumped over lightly as if they had dozed off. A closer look however, revealed that both of them were bleeding from the back of the head--- and the same was true of Katsurou. None of the three showed any sign of life. Their heads also looked slightly... not quite deformed but definitely unusual, and both Yuuta and Shigeru soon recognized the problem (with heal ranks): something had damage or even destroyed their brains without leaving any significant outside injuries, which is definitely a result of some necromantic spell. Given the fact neither Daichi nor Daisuke had even a firm grasp on their weapons, they probably didn't have any warning regarding the attacker before they were killed.

The strangest part is... only the three of them were killed. None of the others had been harmed in any way, nor was anything looted. There was however one other sign of damage--- all the ex-Hojo markings on those three had been mutilated or destroyed (Yumi doesn't have any, since she was once merely a local tracker/guide hired by them).

(also please roll Perception checks for the next two days as part of your next post).

Yumi nods in agreement. "I'll take care of that; I can sense someone near the edge of the fog even if I can't see them," she said before running off. It only took a few minutes before she returned again, shaking her head: "nobody, and no obvious way in either. This patch is even smaller than I thought, probably no larger than 250ft in diameter. Also, the ground inside the fog seems to be spiked--- someone sure wants to keep people out of this place."

Katsurou then walked up to the edge of the fog bank and yelled, "Hellloooooo! Anyone home!? We come bearing news from the north! Our fellow Death Landers have taken the gatehouse! We're no longer condemned to live in this horrible place, or hide in fear every day! We come to tell everybody this--- that we can finally forge a place for ourselves outside this swamp!"

There was no response. Katsurou yelled again a minute later, but several minutes went by and there was still no response from the inside. He shrugged: "well, was worth a shot. Should we leave it at that, or should we try breaking and entering to talk to them??"

The group sets out the next day (Oct. 9th) a few hours later than usual, and took a bit more time as Yuuta tracked the trail around... only to return to the same area. It became apparent that the tracks you began following yesterday, the very same that killed the oni, were indeed the group that attacked you. Those who raided other exile groups weren't very common, but they weren't that rare (nor surprisingly) either...

As they began moving to the southeast again, another three hours have passed before they came across a strange, foggy area. The fog patched was centered around what seems to be a depression, and it was unusually small, but nevertheless very dense (can't see further than 5ft)--- only more suspicious since dense fog don't usually stay around until noontime here. Yumi stepped ahead of the group to examine it, then returned a moment later, claiming: "That's definitely a magical effect. Nature magic, I reckon. Think there's someone inside all that? I can't think of any other reason for someone to conjure up a sizable fog patch in the middle of nowhere."

[ Marty: I assume you scavenge leftover items for spagyrics/bombs automatically, cause otherwise there's not too much to find in the Death Lands. Yes you can stick the sights onto your pistol/rifle, only a light bit of modification required. The scopes weigh 1lb, the shovels 3lbs. ]

[also I should note: whenever you see gold on the loot list and unless some kind of special share is being done... just add 1/Nth of it (N people in party, currently 7) to your share. It's a low equips game so there's not much gold, but every bit helps in the long run =P]

Shigeru's bomb lands right on top of Spearman1's butt and exploded, with its largest chunk hitting the adjacent spearman on the back. The first one almost bounced on the ground as he reacted to the pain of a searing ass. Both the crossbowmen managed to roll fast enough to the side to avoid some of the fire, but the other spearman wasn't fast enough. The fire that was now burning away their camouflage was also helping to illuminate the area, and Yuuta caught sight of a 4th spearman just 10ft away from the rest... The rest of them however were now completely in the open and easily noticeable.

The two flaming spearmen rolls around on the ground trying to extinguish the fire, but if anything, it felt like the fire only spread to the branches they've gathered around for hiding...
the other two however both stood up, bracing against the attack that was soon to come...

Yumi moved to the side of the camp and ducked into the darkness...

With another "twang" sound, a bolt was launched towards Yuuta, piercing straight into his thigh tendons with excruciating pain. It was not from the crossbowman he saw but by another one on the other side of the spearmen, and his shot just gave him away. Both of them were covered in hay and dirt with dark brown clothes underneath... it was almost impossible to see them from afar; actually, even without the night shadows it would have been hard...

[ Critical on Dave: 48 piercing damage, 3 dexterity damage (reduced to half speed), 4 bleed damage ]

The other crossbow fired a split second later, but the bolt had completely missed Yuuta...

[ since for whatever reason D&D has no rules on crouching, here it is ]
[ Crouching: You take -2 penalty on melee attack rolls and cannot use longbows. You receive a +2 bonus to AC against ranged attacks but -2 penalty to AC against melee attacks. You may shift to a crouching position as a free action if you're standing up or as a move-equivalent action if you're prone. You may stand up from a crouching position as 5ft equivalent of movement (including using a 5ft step), although it provokes attacks of opportunity. ]

About half an hour after everyone went to sleep, Yumi came by to inform Katsurou about something that's been bothering her: there's something really wrong with Terasaka, and she's not exactly sure what it is. It would be simple to say he's hungry all the time, but it's far more--- he's famished, and no food or water seems to be fulfilling the urge she's sensing from him. Whatever is causing this is also leaving an urge for bloody violence within him, as if he's craving to murder and kill. It was a feeling he once unleashed only towards foes, but several times today she felt it coming from him almost indiscriminately, although it was always suppressed almost immediately afterwards. Her best guess is that this has something to do with the vampirism Terasaka showed--- probably the curse laid upon him which led to his banishment into the Death Lands. She plans to talk to him about this if it gets worse tomorrow, but she figures Katsurou would like to know... [ Tell me if you want to also discuss this further in a chat ]

...

An hour later, after even Yumi went to sleep, leaving Katsurou sitting on the large rock alone as the only person on watch--- a faint springing noise of sorts, followed by the sounds of a bolt soaring through the air, then a sharp pain as Katsurou's right leg was pierced. Looking down, he saw a crossbow bolt lodged deep in the armored greaves, right through one of his leg tendons...

[Katsurou takes 57 piercing damage + 3 dexterity damage, reduced to half-speed and cannot charge/run until healed]
[also make a Fortitude save vs. poison]

As Katsurou reflexively turned to look towards where the bolt came from, he saw a very faint but sudden motion out in the darkness, around 70~100ft out (thus beyond even shadowy illumination provided by the campfire)... right before another bolt flew in, although this time it only left a deep scratch on the armor as it glanced off. Focusing on the source in the moonlit darkness (it's bit cloudy), Katsurou could just barely make out the outlines of a crossbow being pulled back--- he couldn't really see the user, as the crossbowman seemed to be on the ground and under camouflage...

[I presume Katsurou is going to start waking people up now... so roll initiatives, and make perception checks also...]

[Drew: give me an IM/skype tonight and we'll do this RP over that.]

Yuuta spent some time talking to the warriors guarding the area and found out that of the samurai and soldiers who escorted Tsuyoshi out of that military coup years ago, only four of them are still alive, including Akiyama, his chief of staff. One of the names did catch Yuuta's attention: Taira Eichi, a samurai who was in charge of special field operations way back when, and was once Yuuta's superior one or two levels up (not direct). Nevertheless, Yuuta had met him at least once during the pre-mission pep talks... As one of the troopers point him out, Yuuta realizes that he's aged quite a bit over the last few years. Not that Taira was young to begin with (probably in his mid/late 40s), but it's obvious his health is beginning to fail given the poor conditions within these lands.

"Akiyama," he said as he turned towards the officer besides him, "set up a scout perimeter and gather all the family heads. We need to have an impromptu meeting and this time it can't delay till dusk."

As Akiyama rushed off after acknowledging, Tsuyoshi turned back to Katsurou. "What are your plans at the moment? Will you be coming back with us, or continuing on? At the very least we can provide you with food and a safe shelter for a few hours---- your squad looks like they've had quite a bloody and tiring night."

Despite my lobbying efforts otherwise, there is no definitive chain of command within our group. Besides a general agreement to unite for the purpose of survival, we are still very much at odds, and resentment from... old obligations," Katsurou pauses for a moment to turn his shoulder guard towards the other commander, motioning towards an area where the symbol of the Hojo Clan clan has been mostly scratched off, "still hinders our progress."

"I think, however, that should our organization grower larger, the need for centralized leadership will acknowledged, and then" Katsurou said, with a smile, "it would only be a matter of ensuring that the best people for that job are found."

"Morning!" the leader called as approached. Despite wearing white clothes, they were also particularly clean and neat. The guy also had a smile on that felt out of place for anyone who was within the death lands. "I'm Tougou Tsuyoshi, leader of the Tougou clan. What might I do for you?"

"Yumi and Yuuta, keep an eye on the perimeter, particularly our rear. Everyone else, be at your guard."

Katsurou then proceeded to begin walking towards the other group of Dealthlanders, his arms raised in the most non-offensive gesture possible.

"Hold! I would speak with your leader! We seek no harm!" He shouted.

It took two more hours, but between Yuuta and Yumi, with help from the rest of the party, they managed to track down the band they had been chasing after quickly. It was still mid-morning when Yumi first caught sight of the target --- at least a hundred people and over half a dozen wagons, each pulled by an omniverous giant lizard. Although rarely seen within the Death Lands because of food supply issues, giant lizards were amongst the preferred beasts of burden in the outside world given their strength, endurance, and ability to eat just about anything; although their slow speeds and broad scaly backs make them poor mounts. It undoubtly took a large band to require, support, and protect this many of them, and this was possible even a clan or tribe...

"Not bad. We've been spotted already," said Yumi, as she nodded towards the rearmost wagon where an archer keeping watch atop it was looking directly towards the Blackhearts group. He had both a bow and an arrow in hand, but neither of them were raised against the group.

As the Blackhearts approached the large band, all of the veterans (everyone except Shigeru) soon realized that this was no rabble. They weren't moving in quite a precise formation, especially not to the untrained eye, but the warriors that surrounds the civilians and wagons were definitely holding a loose zigzag column of sorts. Furthermore, unlike the mixed armaments usually seen from other groups' warriors, this band's fighters were mostly armed with shield and spears. Not to mention all of their armor had been treated to have the same white color, and each of them were wearing a thin, white armband with a red circle on it...

Yuuta then saw the flag that blew over the leading wagon --- a white background with a large red circle slightly off-center, with red beams pouring off it in every direction, as if the light coming from a dawning sun. He had recognized it immediately. After all, it was the flag of the Tougou clan: one he had once served and fought several battles for. He had heard after leaving the military that the coup, which had diverted his mission reinforcements and gotten most of his unit killed, had succeeded. The new lord had executed most of the former ruling clan and its closest followers to show his brutality and incite fear, but rumors claim that one of the central family members escaped.
[If you recognize the description: yes, it looks like an IJN flag]

Katsurou also noticed that amongst the members of this group, there were several of them who wore either modified Hojo samurai armor or Hojo mage robes. Four of them to be precise: two guys amongst the outer column guards, one of them probably a ronin judging by the katana on his side, the other probably a mere soldier; a small girl wearing robes who sat on the back of a wagon and seemed to be either writing or drawing; lastly, another girl camped on top of the leading wagon, with what seems to be a cat on her head and, more surpisingly, a rifle on her side (firearms were uncommon enough, but you've certain never seen a Hojo warrior with one). The first three you remember by their faces (although not by name) as participants during the Hojo raid on the Saints' main temple. The last one you've never met before. Nevertheless, the fact this group accepted ex-Hojo warriors and mages already says something about them.

How we came to be here, and in so few numbers is a sorrowful tale.

It was after an attack on a band of murders deep in the Hojo lands. We defeated them, but the land we fought upon was cursed, and soon, so too were we. We were traveling with a band of Sohei warriors to bolster our number and strength against the tainted we were pursing. However, it did not take long for them to sense the taint in us. They fell upon us, and what you see, minus Teresaka, who joined us after we came here, is all that remains of that band.

Perhaps, now you see why we are so distrusted, despite our strength and victory."
