Over the course of last night and this morning, the invasion forces of the Terran Imperium have crossed Kochikaze borders and attacked mobile forces and military fortifications of Tsutsui and Mohara. The Imperial 77th Field Brigade made its move while the Tsutsui-Mohara-Asakura forces were still assembling from multiple vectors to campaign against the foreign space invaders. The Tsutsui military reports that the Imperials cut across their southern border with the Tsuchimikado Forest, into Mohara, where it destroyed two reinforcement columns before returning. The alliance forces attempted to press the injured Imperial 77th into decisive battle but were unable to do so before it converged with a second Imperial brigade and shattered the alliance sky cruiser fleet. The Imperials destroyed a total of 35 Sky Cruisers (16 Mohara, 16 Tsutsui, and 3 Asakura) and 2 Assault Transports over the course of these battles, shattering the aerial combat strength of the gathered alliance fleet and leaving only its ground-unit transportation force and escorts, which managed to withdraw back to Tsutsui's primary fortifications in time. Faerskor also reports that the Ace Commander Segarum Faerskor also participated in the early phases of the battle with the elite 7th Incarnum Juggernaut Squadron, but was forced to withdraw due to overwhelming Imperial firepower as the aggressors cornered a single squad of Moharan Cruisers heading up to the front.
Tetsuo Tsutsui, the head of the Tsutsui, was reported to have been killed when his flagship was destroyed during the battle. Tsutsui officials publically announced that their people are prepared for mass-mobilization, to arm every ex-mercenary and make the Imperialists pay in blood for the killing of their leader. For a people which several years of mercenary service is almost seen as a rite-of-passage to adulthood, it is expected that the Tsutsui will be able to significantly bolster their forces, as long as equipment is available - armaments that the Tsutsui have also spent decades stockpiling. The Tsutsui has yet to release any news on who will succeed him to lead their province during this crucial time.
During the decisive engagement, Kochikaze military forces, which recently surrendered to the Imperials at the order of Kasai Kochikaze, rose up in rebellion at the city of Senrei. Unfortunately for them, the Imperials responded swiftly and crushed the rebellion with military might. Accounts from the city's residents confirm that the aerial bombardment and even siege weapons such as heavy flamers were utilized during the battle despite the urban setting. Civilian casualties, while currently untallied, are presumed to be heavy in light of these tactical choices, especially in a number of the city blocks that were virtually demolished by the fighting. A ranking Kochikaze civil official who wishes to be kept anonymous spoke out that "it is obvious from these actions, that despite the Imperials' sugar-coated words and pretentious acts of sincerity, they care little, if any at all, for the people of Chroma. That crap they're announcing - that's just self-justification for their own greed, nothing more." When asked about the fact the Imperials quickly repaired the battle damage dealt to the city, the official responded "They can repair those buildings they trashed, but can they replace all the belongings that was annihilated to specks of dust by their missiles? How about all those lives they've shattered, or eliminated entirely? It's like as if someone killed your kids and then offer you some money to 'pay' for it."
Military analysts are baffled by the Imperials' actions during the battles today. As far as intelligence gather, the 77th Brigade should have been the only force available. The Mohara claims that when the 77th departed, they confirmed that the Imperial military base in Kochikaze was virtually emptied. But somehow a new, second Brigade of armed forces popped up between the time of the 77th's departure and when the alliance cruiser fleet began their chase of a 77th brigade attempting to withdraw back to Kochikaze. Short of equipping an entire Brigade's vehicles with teleportation capabilities, which would raise costs to astronomical levels, experts were unable to figure out how the Imperium managed to instantaneously move in the new Brigade. All that can be offered is a warning to Chromian commanders that the Imperium can instantaneously move not only small strike groups but also large military forces.
A council of Moharan military analysts also claim that the Imperium must be rooted deeply in the concepts of fanaticism, based on its military performance. Battlefield reports show that Imperial forces managed to hold together and even maintain a certain degree of cohesion even at remarkably high casualties levels. One analyst commented "It's remarkable in a military perspective, but it's also against human nature! It makes you ask yourself - are they brainwashing their own troops or something? Or are they really aliens who just look like us but with completely foreign thought processes?"

1. Dave - Finalize those administrative stuff. I want a list of the compiled details. This should be done by the end of this weekend (I've told you several weeks ago to get started).

2. Drew - I believe you have announcements planned.

3. Judson - suggest you finish any post-battle planning & analysis, because if you do that when I spring a new threat - too late.

4. You guys still need to figure out what to do with the POWs. And if you think you can ship them elsewhere for other people to handle - you're mistaken. Keep in mind this is a political issue in and of itself, as US POW problems have shown.

5. You have a Shadow-Legion company now, figure out what to do with it.

6. If no-one has anything to say in the Nuke thread, I'm going to update it sometime tonight/tomorrow-morning.

Gabriel's attention to deal non-lethal damage was completely absorbed by the armor that the trooper wore. The powered-infantry in question then attacked Gabriel 3 times with his katar, and was deflected each time.

Enemy strong point in Senrei Central Park has been broken. Commander is dead, and forces are routing and surrendering.

With their bloody death of the command and his lieutenants (although one's just crippled) sent his close guards into shock, while the light infantry units, who were holding up only with the constant motivation from their leader, quickly collapsed. The remnants of the left wing followed suit, as those in the rear fled in random directions while those in the front tossed away their weapons and surrendered...

At the same time, group 2 was reporting that they're encounter only minor resistance within the enemy's fortifications. Most of those within are operators and gunners, rather than infantry troopers, and were poorly armed. The Captain expects they will take the fortifications within minutes.

Group 3, after completely eliminating the opposition, was currently reforming itself...

On the Ships...
A message broadcasts itself across the halls of the ship Gabriel is on: "Kochikaze forces - We have take control of your ship, as well as the bridges of your sister ships. Recognize that your rebellion as failed. Surrender now, and put an end to this unnecessary bloodshed!", then a different voice "If you wish to show your loyalty and patriotism to your state, then value your own life and dedicate it to bettering a new Chroma!"

The two rail-gunners in the back looks somewhat undecided. The powered-trooper in the front turns his head around (possibly saying something over their comm), and then charges at you with his electro-katar... (and misses)

At the same time, Colonel Pahlen orders HVM launchers to directly link with the sensors feed from Star-Cruiser Berezina and begin calculating interception paths against the hostile ICBMs. Tracking is authorized to open fire as soon as firing resolutions are calculated, whatever their accuracies.

Colonel Pahlen: "...the problem here is that our accuracies are far too low at this range. If the ICBMs come close to us our counter-missiles will be able to shoot it down without a problem given their missiles' poor ECM. But if they're aimed at the Kochikaze cities that are far away from the base, then the chance of us shooting it down in time may be as low as 67% - not odds I'd want to have with nukes."

Major Bayreuth: "And the Berezina?"

Major Rantzau: "An orbiting starship will have better accuracy than us, although their sensors aren't optimized for dealing with atmospheric threats and their weapons even less so. The other problem is that Captain Liliane would likely need all the computing power they have to deal with the cyber attack, and any requests we make upon them will detract from that end."

The two powered-infantry on either side of the commander did their best to guard him against Sigmund's attack. The first one overextended his arm in an attempt to intercept and the force blade cut straight through the left arm. The other however managed to deflect Sigmund's force blade enough to miss the intended target... the close-guard infantry continued to hammer at Sigmund's shields...
[ Damage: 517 damage, may breach your EMS if you fail save ][ Reflex DC 30 halves ][ No evasion ]

The officer in question, who seems to be the Kochikaze equivalent of a Major based on his insignias, drew his own sword (although it's almost obvious he's poorly trained in its use) and continued his best to rally his forces, shouting for them to fight to their death against Imperialistic oppression. Yet despite his efforts, the center units collapsed under the KVs' attack, while the left wing began to fall back as the KVs changed direction towards them. The light infantry reinforcements managed to bring down 2 of the CKs through sheer force of numbers, but even they were quickly fracturing due to the heavy casualties they were taking against the 5 CKs remaining.

Group 3 reports that in the south they have destroyed most of the enemy's Skirmish and Gun Crawlers, and the remaining enemy troops were routing, probably due to either the loss of their defensive objective or their command within one of the combat vehicles.

On the ships...
Gabriel's halberd smashed into the trooper's left side and likely crushed his shoulder, although the soldier managed to hold himself in position and hurl the package towards Gabriel after setting it beeping... the two gunners in the back withdrew another 40ft before firing again...

The KVs that made it to the bridge on the northeast Cruiser (that Gabriel's on) also reports that the remaining defenders at the bridge were surrendering as it seems their reinforcements have been cut off.

The units sent to take the central cruiser however, was reporting some difficulties dealing with stiff enemy resistance combined with continuous arrival of their reinforcements... although several of the blaster-mages made sure that cruiser isn't going anywhere when they fried half the panels in the bridge and killed most of the bridge crew. A Sergeant also notes that one of the officers they killed seems to be a Colonel, and as far as you know, Kochikaze only has one of those...

In Senrei...
Four more tri-barrel guns blew apart as their ammunition exploded from fire attack spells. Most of the gun crews weren't injured much as they weren't handling the ammo, except for a few gunners who took direct hits from Flame Strike spells.
At this point, only five tri-barrels in the center were still operational, although Rodrich's forward surge caused the gunners to reconcentrate their fire upon him once again. A mage amongst the reinforcements then fired a dispel at Rodrich...

[ Rodrich's current EMS is 0/2000 on first powercell and 2000/2000 on second ]

Sigmund disables another two troopers with his lightning spell, whilst the CKs pretty much finishes off the remnants of the right flank. But further to the center and the rear were enemy units that were either reorganized or still fresh. Particularly the light infantry from the rear, which began firing into the CKs. Most of the damage were absorbed by EMS, although a few knights took some light to moderate injuries.
A mage besides the commander then cast a spell, and Sigmund's entire position was suddenly covered in a dense fog that's near impossible to move about in...

On the right flank, Sigmund's lightning bolt sent a surge of electricity across three powered-infantry, their powered armor soon started smoking (and moving somewhat erratically) from the high voltage shock. The other KVs taking cover from the guns, catching onto Rodrich's example by now, were soon hurling fire spells of their own towards the defensive line. Secondary explosions soon rocked the entire battlefront. Yet in the meantime, a fresh platoon of light infantry in scattered-out formation arrived from the rear as reinforcements, being lead by what seems to be a few officers, one of them shouting constantly (can't hear anything exact over battle noise).
Volley fire on Rodrich:
Damage (post EMS): 277 (Reflex DC30 halves, DR applies tenfold)[No evasion]

On the right flank, Sigmund's CKs surface from under the ground and attacked the remaining troops there, who had lost some cohesion due to Rodrich's early spellfire but was by no means disorganized. Sigmund's attack seems to have taken the powered-trooper by surprise and cut into his armor, although not by much - and probably didn't cause anything worse than a light to moderate wound. The CKs managed to down only a few enemies before they started reacting, as the powered-infantry activated electric charged katars on their left arms and attacked the knights.
( attack vs. Sigmund : miss, miss )

Group 2 reports that they're in the central park (other side from Group 1) and we encountered only light uncoordinated resistance. The Lieutenant requests if he should have his grenadiers assault the fortifications or swing around and assist you (will still take a while since they can't go airborne over the fortifications directly, lest they be hammered down by the guns).

Group 3 is still fighting down south...

On the Ship...
Gabriel and the other KV heads down the corridor and comes upon an intersection between two major corridors. Down one end, a pair of closed heavy blast doors could be seen, while down the other end, the armored footsteps of power-infantry running towards this direction from another, unseen hallway could be heard. Guessing by the sounds, they're at least 90ft away, and numbering at least a half-dozen. (Perception check for a possible better guess on the numbers).

The enemy retaliated as multiple guns opened fire at once upon Rodrich's position. The concentrated fire destroyed any obstacles granting cover and quickly tore through his EMS. The impact of the tri-barrel shells could not be felt thanks to Ironguard, but those same shells exploded on collision rather than bounced back...

[ You think he's thinking in the right direction... although you have little clue yourself, frankly ]
Comm channel is calming down as the units finish reoriented themselves. It seems now heavy fighting has broken out across all three cruisers, and the Imperials were already starting to take the advantage, at least in where they are. One of the mage lieutenants note that the cruisers seem to be nowhere as manned as they should be - probably just operating on little more than skeleton crews.

Suddenly, the base's command center sent out a message to the commanders: The base network's firewall was under cyber attack from unknown sources. The first two of the base network's ten defense lines were quickly penetrated by the initial hacking.

Even before the message finished...

( This message is sent out to command level personnel of both brigades and the knight-squadron commanders )

"This is Liliane from the Berezina. We have detected twelve ICBMs (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles) currently heading towards Kochikaze along six vectors of approach. I repeat, we have twelve ICBMs on route towards Kochikaze. We did not detect their launch, although our calculations make it that they're from separate missile sites within the Delral & Faerskor mountain regions. Most of them appear to be heading towards base CK-1, although we cannot be certain of their targets, nor do we have any idea of the payload, but it's likely they're carrying nuclear warheads! I repeat..."

Especially the case for the ADATS, seeing as the vehicle type as named Air-Defense Anti-Tank System for a reason, basically a mobile SAM platform of old adapted for multi-purpose use - and then converted to using HVMs instead of missiles when the tech came out during the war over Penthiae. The REDEINs are meant to provide an outer, 'unmanned' and thus more expendable, screen. But the other units should be able to pick up the slack when the REDEINs are elsewhere, like say, for a strike mission. Also, from a costs standpoint, it's most effective to utilize REDEINs to screen against the most dangerous foes, since they are unmanned after all. Besides, using REDEINs purely for ECM isn't anything unheard of - Fleet-Marshal Pokryshkin utilized ECM-equipped REDEINs to great effect during the Second Battle of Penthiaen Orbit [Knowledge(history) check].

Major Rantzau explains that unlike Hussars which are equipped with a large number of decoys, REDEINs rely on self-defense ECM and won't make even nearly as good EW screening elements as the Hussars, unless their equipment was optimized towards it. Furthermore, if the REDEINs were configured completely for EW-screening duty and dropped of external armaments, then they could be operated solely on auto-pilot with minimal loss in performance, freeing up the pilots to control a second wave of actually manned REDEINs. Of course, the problem with this will be that REDEINs will be lost at an even higher speed, and the Landship can only carry so much. It might be ideal to request command for an extra stock of REDEINs to be kept at base CK-1 (and the facilities to store/service them), that way as long as we're operating near the base we can call upon the base's extra reserves. [Yes this'll cost CPs]

Major Samsonov notes that bringing ECM modules for the REDEINs on the command landships mean something else space-consuming will be sacrificed, be it the number of REDEINs carried or the REDEIN missile stock available.

ARTILLERY
There seems to be general agreement regarding the Katyusha MLRS issue.

FLEETS
Colonel Pahlen warns that don't be too sure about the current lack of enemy ships. Tsutsui may have lost most of their ships and the Mohara probably around half of their fleet, but there are plenty of other states in Chroma. If they weren't staying to the side and just watching, they'd be able to conjure some truly enormous fleets - which is likely why high command gave command of the campaign to the diplo guys.

Major Bayreuth notes that furthermore, the enemy has learned the hard way that their Cruiser forces cannot stand alone against our Field Brigades. Which means that in the future we can expect major ground-side support. Furthermore, they now know we can deploy units into an area without moving them over - so they'll be able to guess something along the lines of our Teleportation Circle. What caught them off-guard this battle won't work again.

SIEGE & URBAN COMBAT
Major Soissons notes that relationship between mobile artillery units and fortifications have always given fortifications the advantage, that's not something we can help. As every other era in history there are only two ways to crack a fortification: throw overwhelming amounts of firepower at it, preferably at least a 3-to-1 ratio, or close in with infantry and root out the defender. As far as equipment goes, the heavy-weapon squads amongst the infantry and grenadiers have flamethrowers, which might help a bit.

Colonel Pahlen simply states that 'urban combat always prove to be a meat-grinder, no other way around this', except to have more and better trained infantry and grenadier units. Unfortunately, we can't expect the circumstances to reproduce the First Battle of Trias [Knowledge(history)]. One thought though, is to supply oxygen rebreathers to all the troops, and have them take control of cities with their shields entirely in guard-mode. The downside to this is, of course, their batteries will get expended rapidly and every so while we'll have to stop the units from advancing in order to take some time to charge up their power cells. This'll work at least until Chroma reverse-engineer and start mass producing our troops' resonance generators.

The main problem we faced in our initial fights was massive losses to the armored companies as they closed with the enemy. The most damaging enemy fire was direct-firing heavy railguns, using primarily electronic targeting.

Using Hussar scouts to boost the ECM of the lead companies was somewhat effective at reducing casualties, but the casualties suffered by the scout units were unacceptably high. One potential solution would be to equip REDEIN fighters with electronic warfare modules rather than missiles, and use them to screen the armored companies. This has the benefit of a providing a large number of screening units without putting any pilots in harm's way. However, it also deprives us of the anti-fighter capabilities of the REDEINs.

Possible solutions to this:
-Use REDEINs with standard armaments to screen armored companies. This will provide significantly less protection against Sky Cruiser fire, but will allow us to counter their air skimmers most effectively.

-Use Langskips / Hussars to counter enemy fighters. Equip all scouts with anti-fighter missiles, give standing orders for Langskips to engage airskimmers as a first priority. I am concerned that this might not give us adequate protection from the enemy fighters, given the numbers that they can deploy from a large cruiser force. However, from what we've seen so far the rail cannons are a much greater offensive threat than the skimmers, and I think the tradeoff would be worth it.

In the future we should also make sure to have the Katyushas hold their fire until enemy screening units are deployed from their assault transports, since they will probably be most effective at destroying many small units spread over an area, and also always counter incarnum juggernauts with sufficient forces.

However, given the current situation it doesn't seem very likely that we'll be facing another major aerial battle any time soon. The enemy has only 9 Sky Cruisers left to defend both Tsutsui and Asakura, and I don't think that they will risk facing us in open battle until they gather more forces. Instead, the main challenge going forward will be taking cities and fortresses from the enemy.

I would like to rely heavily on artillery and close-air support to clear away enemy strong points in urban fighting, as much as is politically feasible. This will require the use of missile-armed REDEINs for air strikes on the enemy, since they will be capable of more precise attacks than the artillery units.

What I would like to do is have all REDEINs armed with missiles be default, but have EW modules on hand in both Landships so that we can switch them on if a large enemy Cruiser force is detected, or if we need to assault fortifications with a large number of heavy railgun emplacements.

Aside from that, I'm not sure how much we can do to prepare our forces for urban combat. One thing would be to arm the Heavy Weapon teams with close-range weapons, but aside from that any suggestions would be welcome.

At the same time, a massive explosion was heard from the center of the base. Chatter from the comm. channels was still chaotic, but it seems someone had bombed and damaged (if not disabled) the 77th's command landship. A few seconds later, a series of explosions also resounded from upstairs, around the area of Ivan's office...

Both continue to ready Greater Deflect spells in case the assassin finds them, but Ivan sets his shields back to normal mode (should remain in Guard Mode until the start of my next action).
