Min'astekal is standing near the far door, peering into the darkness. You are tired from the day's fights, but manage to stay alert. The watch passes tensely, and several times you think you hear something moving in the dark. By the time your watch nears its end your eyelids have turned to lead. You find that you have been gazing vacantly into the murky darkness when you realize that something is amiss. For precious seconds you cannot figure it out, but then realize that the floor of the next room over appears to be moving. You leap up and shout a warning just as the swarm of rats erupts through the doorway.

The rats swarm over Min, who takes 1 point of damage, however, they don't seem interested in attacking her. Instead, they flow past her into the room, spreading out across the floor before moving towards the opposite exit (that the party entered from).

Fenbar and Reikel are awakened by Min's shout of alarm, but, still in a haze of sleep, they are unable to react quickly as the rats flood the room.

((Min can take one turn. Fenbar and Reikel are unable to act yet.))

Reikel this time manages to tear off one of the creatures, dislodging its foul proboscis in a spurt of blood. The creature turns and immediately dives onto Fenbar, but the gnome manages to beat it off with his crossbow before it can get a hold.

The last creature stays attached to Reikel, who takes a further 4 points of constitution damage.

Before you can react, the beasts hurtle forward through the air at a frightening speed. They are small, reddish creatures, about a foot long, with four batlike wings and eight clawed legs. Instead of a mouth, they have something that appears to be a bony spear jutting from their face. The things are reddish-brown, and their eyes burn with supernatural malevolence.

You have barely a second to take this all in before they reach you. One careens past, missing completely, but the other three slam into you in quick succession, latching on with their pincers.

Reikel takes 3 damage and is grappled by three of the things. The fourth is now adjacent to him.
Reikel, Fenbar, and Min can now act, in any order that they can post.

As you have time to catch your breath, Reikel realizes that none of the rat bodies appear to be badly burned, or even particularly scorched, despite the waves of fire he had been pouring over them throughout the fight. He also notices that none of the rats seemed to display the characteristic energy webbing entrapping them and slowing their movements that his entangling breath usually causes.

The rats hit by Fenbar's Color Spray freeze in their headlong advance, apparently unable to move. You notice that they do appear to remain conscious. Fenbar's blast of breath singes them, but does no significant damage.

However, although the first wave has been stopped in its tracks, more rats continue to pour through the doorway, swarming over their halted brethren and hurtling headlong at the party, malice burning in their flaming eyes. The swarm heads for Min'astekal, but does not quite manage to reach her.

In the interest of streamlining gameplay, I want you to elect a Party Leader. The Leader would be able to post where the party is moving out of combat so that we can proceed more quickly through the less important bits. As soon as we enter combat everyone will take over their own movement, and you can post to move differently if you want, but by default the whole party will move with the party leader. This also means that we won't have the gnome caster rushing into a room first just because no one else is posting: an established marching order will be used.

Post who you think should be leader. It should be someone who can post often and who you trust to move the party.

Fenbar feels vitality flowing through him with the fell beast is dispatched. He is able to sit up, covered in ichor, feeling somewhat revived. Finally able to get a good look at the thing that attacked him, Fenbar realizes that it is not an ordinary darkmantle. Instead of black or stony-colored it appears to be the color of dried blood, and instead of blood like a normal specimen this thing is oozing a thick, greenish ichor. You doubt that it is a native of the Material plane.

Before he can react, a dark shape drops from the ceiling. Fenbar barely has a chance to cry out before his head is engulfed in what feels like a stifling, warm sack, cutting off his scream of surprise. Fenbar feels tentacles wrap around his neck as the thing begins to squeeze his head.

Min'astekal and Reikel see a dark shape drop down onto Fenbar as he moves through the door, immediately wrapping around his head. A sickening muffled crunch is heard as the barely seen enemy begins to squeeze.

Fenbar is grappled and takes 8 points of damage.

Everyone say what they are doing, and then all actions will be resolved.
