For well over an hour, nothing happened. Only the quiet night surrounded the mining camp, and the laborers were getting drowsy and quietly speaking -- wondering if the Drow had already given up and left.

Then Leah, followed closely by Adoett and Gorin, began to hear a sound. A strange, continuous grating noise, as if it was some ambient sound of nature. It was barely audible at first, and then slowly began to grow.

( feel free to make Knowledge[nature] or Knowledge[dungeoneering] checks )

The gnolls doesn't find any bleeding out drow inside the walls. It seems most of the injured burned to death after that last Firedrake blast. The illusion of hell also subsides after a few minutes.

The overseer organizes the laborers to seal the three tunnels using whatever rock and debris they have available inside. They focused on closing the inside segments of the tunnels, as the first gnoll who tried to bring materials to the tunnel's external entrance almost got shot by an arrow. It was clear the attackers haven't left yet.

The 4 gnoll laborers who died were brought to the courtyard and laid in a row. It seemed clear that those in the north tower were grappled by Black Tentacles and then killed by arrows from outside the fort.

In light of that, the Overseer asks: "should we keep manning the towers and their ballistae? or should we be only keeping a lookout there?"

Meanwhile... the waiting game resumes (any preparations?)

After the Repair and the first Cure spell, Goodberry is at 14 HP with no non-lethal.
He then reaches over to Ahz and does a Transfer Wounds
2d6+5 = 9+5=14 sending 9 to Adoett and 5 to the Ogre. Goodberry takes the 9 nonlethal.

Then Gorin's second Cure goes off, bringing Goodberry up to 21/37 with 2 nonlethal.

Goodberry then drops Ahz (full HP afaik) from the network and adds the Overseer.

Goodberry uses 2 Transfer Wounds on the Overseer, sending overflow to the Ogre:
8+5 = 13 healed, Goodberry at 10 nonlethal
5+5=10 healed, Goodberry at 15 nonlethal

Goodberry then spends 2 turns manifesting Natural Healing at 1PP from cognizance crystals to heal himself 3HP each cast, 6HP total
He then spends 3PP from his inherent COgnizance Crystal to manifest Natural Healing at 3PP healing the Overseer and the Ogre for 6 each, sending Overseer overflow to the Ogre.

Current status:
Goodberry: 27/37 HP, 9 nonlethal, 14/40 PP remaining, no cog crystals remain, 2 Transfer Wounds left
Adoett: Full HP 15/22PP, 1PP cog crystal
Overseer: 29/??
Ogre: 32/40

He will also call for any drow who are bleeding out to be stabilized and brought to him. Or him to them, he doesn't care which. From there he will Steal Health to drain the last reserves into his group, this only works if the drow in question are at least level 3 and have a CON score.

Gr1 kills an extra drow as they retreated from the walls. The remaining 8 warriors vanish into the night. After a few moments, he calls over to Adoett and the overseer: "I count 23 drow bodies!"

The gnoll overseer spoke to the other laborers around the Firedrake for a moment, before turning to Adoett:

"Well that's all of the Firedrake ammo," he kicked the now useless piece of artillery. "Looks like y'all were pretty successful here fending them off. Wish I could say the same -- that Black Tentacle spell and their archers killed all three of my boys in the north tower. Only I got away, barely," he nursed the two broken-off arrow shafts in his shoulder. "Seems like y'all choice to defend the courtyard and not the wall was the right call."

"You have a healer with you right?"

For a brief second, DO looked as if it withstood Leah's Mind Thrust, but then the persistent power plows through the drow's mental reserves and lash into its mind (nat20 save followed by nat2). The drow leader's eyes rolled into his head as he collapsed like a doll with its strings cut.

The gnoll overseer slams the trigger as soon as Adoett steps aside. The Firedrake roars, and a gush of flame swallows 5 of the drow inside the walls. 2 of them were lit on fire, and they ran about screaming for a few seconds before dropping dead; a 3rd drow ran out of the tunnels in a similar state before burning to death. 3 others were badly burned by the flames, and any remaining will to fight shattered.

Adoett then moves back up to the remaining drow.

The gnolls behind Gorin unleash another crossbow volley against the remaining drow on the walls, but proved largely ineffective as only a single bolt struck one of the warriors.

With their morale shattered, the drow warriors began retreating. The archers outside vanished back into the darkness, while those inside the walls all rushed to evacuate through the tunnels.

( free attack of opportunity for Adoett and the Astral Construct )

( everyone feel free to take 1 more round of actions before dropping out of combat order )

Attack: 1d20 + 12 = 14.
Damage: 1d6 + 10 = 12.

Feeling Goodberry's telepathic network go down, Leah decides the commanding drow must die. Channeling energy around her [Wild Surge], Leah reaches out to shred its mind [Mind Thrust], and won't take no for an answer:

Persistent Mind Thrust: 5PP +2 (Surge): 5d10 = 28 vs mind. 2 Will-saves save (Persistent Power).
Enervation Roll: 1d20 = 1 => Lose another 5PP + Dazzled, 2 rounds.

Maybe you shouldn't channel volatile extra energy when you're upset over a comrade in arms going down. The energy burns through Leah's veins, taking even more than she got extra, and leaving her dazzled for a few moments. She still manages to restore the bit of Psionic Focus she just used.

Effects:
Force Screen (AC +4, 26 rounds)
Dazzled (Attack -1, Perception (Sight) -1, 2 rounds)
4th-level Astral Construct (+4 AC, 4 rounds)

Ahz's Springal volley hammers strikes its intended target. DO took only light wounds thank to the defending bone blocking some shots. However, 2 of the drow in the rear and 1 just inside the walls were killed by the downpour of arrows, while 3 of those atop the walls took heavy damage.

Gorin's attack grazes off the drow's breastplate. Although by this point, he could tell that the drow warriors' morale was beginning to break after their heavy casualties.

Gr1 shoots and kills one of the drow atop the walls who had been injured by Ahz's Springal volley.

A badly injured gnoll overseer moves into view from the northeast, having retreated back from the north tower. He takes control of the Firedrake and readies the shot. With bloody vengeance in his eyes he cries to Adoett: "step back!"

The DO points towards the central Keep and calls down a beam of to illuminate the Keep's NE corner, where the force bolt emerged last round to strike him. It served as a signal for the 4 drow outside the walls, who sent in a volley of arrows. As Ahz had moved back to fire the Springal, it was Goodberry whom -- looking over the battlefield -- ended up being the unfortunate target.

All 4 arrows struck him one after another, dealing (11 + 7 + 12 + 13 = 43 piercing/magic damage) and lighting him up with Faerie Fire (although this didn't matter as he dropped unconscious behind the protective battlements).

Ahz's bolt of force strikes DO and disrupts his spellcasting efforts, as well as leaving him critically wounded.

Gorin shoots DO again and sees his arrow bounce off the shadowstuff armor.

Gr1 shoots another flaming arrow into the drow near him, killing his opponent and hurling the body back down the walls.

DO casts a healing spell on himself, recovering from much of his wounds almost instantly.

Thanks to his low-light vision + the sunrod that Gr1 threw outside the walls, Ahz could see four more drow (with longbows) moving up outside. With the four-arrow volleys from earlier in mind, this was most likely the support fire group.

Ahz's 3rd springal shot (in this battle) finally lands exactly where he aimed, and badly wounds all three of the drow in the rear.

Goodberry's bomb lands on the target space, not hitting anything directly but splashing 6 (+4 more in tunnels) drow with an explosion of alchemic fire. The badly wounded drow that just attacked Adoett finally falls, succumbing to his wounds.

The gnoll ranger (Gr1) steps back from the drow that just scaled up the walls and lands a solid shot on the enemy (AS21) at point-blank range, almost kill him.

The only bloodied cries could be heard from the north ballista tower.

DO levitates up the outer wall, until Gorin, Leah, and Adoett could see this drow leader for the first time. He wore no armor but a layer of semi-solid shadows seem to wrap around his body. He looks up at the Keep, and began to chant a spell (Ahz and Goodberry both recognize it as some modified version of Summon Swarm).

( next up: Gorin*, Leah, Adoett )

( I messed up the init order a bit; Gorin should actually go before Gr1; but I don't think any of the actions above would affect the situation around him )

At Adoett's signal, the gnoll manning the Firedrake slams its trigger, and a cone of flames pour of its nozzle. 2 of the drow were roasted outright. 2 more managed to dodge the bulk of the flames, but their sustained injuries left them barely standing. Some of the flames then bounced and flooded into the tunnels, and 2 drow soon ran out, screaming in pain with their bodies on fire. Both of them sank to their knees almost as soon as they entered the courtyard, their endurance exceeded by the painful burns.

Three of the laborers began reloading the Firedrake, while Adoett moved up to block the way and the ogres lining up behind him.

The gnolls atop the Keep shifts the Springal back into position and cries to Ahz: "ready!"

One of the drow that barely survived ran up to attack Adoett (attack of opportunity)

The other one stabbed at Leah's Astral Construct with a rapier, but merely bounced off its deflective armor. However the drow still inside the tunnel does score a hit on the Construct ( 7 pierce damage )

The gnolls behind Gorin reload their crossbows and unload another volley. They manage 1 hit and 1 crit this time, killing the drow on the AC's flank and badly injuring the one in the tunnel.

More drow rush out of the left hand tunnels, stepping over their dead comrades' burning bodies. Two of them move up to Adoett and attack him. One misses, but the other stabs his rapier into an artery ( 13 piercing damage )

Three drow managed to scale up the outer walls with grappling hooks.

Three of the drow at the rear, noticeably blinded by Ahz's Glitterdust, began to grope about and retreat (with a fourth trying to help his friend). However two 'warning' shots soon came from the darkness outside the keep, which murders one of the retreating drow. A stern voice bellowed in their tongue: "death to cowards! turn and fight!"

( next up: Goodberry, Ahz )
( Ahz : remember that due to the outer walls' height, you can only see [direct fire] squares at least 20ft out from the outer walls )

Gorin receives a bewildered glance from the badly injured drow next to him.

Ahz's burst of glitter leaves 3 of the drow blinded. Their leader ('DO') however was unaffected, other than scowling at the fact he was now sparkling.

The north ballista shoots, and Ahz/Goodberry could see from atop the keep as a bolt impales DO's shoulders, leaving him badly wounded. However the victory was short-lived as DO raises his rod towards the north tower (before moving south), and through the moonlight one could see Black Tentacles erupting from the ground and writhing toward the skies. The screams of the tower's garrison could be heard in the darkness as they struggled against the crushing appendages the spell summoned, plus more arrows that soared out of the night.

Healing: 2d6+5 = 7+5 = 12, Goodberry takes 7 as nonlethal.

He spends a Swift action using to determine how wounded the Gnoll still is.

If the Gnoll is doing ok, he readies to manifest a 5P{ Natural Healing (3 targets, 9HP each, 27 HP total to distribute) the next time anyone in my collective takes a meaningful hit.

If the Gnoll is still more than 12HP down, he will instead do another Transfer Wounds.
Healing: 2d6+5 = 7+5 = 12, I take the 7 as nonlethal. This would leave me at 14 nonlethal and 37/37 HP.

Ahz's springal shot was off the mark again (3 squares to the southeast), though the incoming wave of drow presented such a big target that its rain of arrow caught a half dozen of them anyway. After he shoots, the three gnolls atop the keep rushed to begin reloading the weapon.

Gorin's warning caused the gnolls on his side to huddle against the main building. None of them wanted to risk being hit by flames sprouting from the firedrake.

Ranger1 lit up a Sunrod and haphazardly threw it outside the walls, unwilling to peek his head over again in fear of retaliatory fire. It landed in the breach and lit up the area (noted on map; those on walls/keep have direct visibility), just in time to see a mass of at least two dozen drow rush to the walls and begin making their way through the 3 tunnels. Meanwhile in the back of the formation, a drow ('DO') who seem to be clad in shadows sends off a burst of magic (spellcraft: Recitation) before marching forward, all the while shouting at the lesser warriors and driving them into the breach.

Leah begins manifesting her Astral Construct as she hears the attackers entering the tunnels.

The first 6 drow squeeze through the tunnels and emerge into the courtyard. All of them were already wounded from the early Springal volley, and those through the eastern tunnel take a hail of bolts from the gnolls' readied crossbows. Unfortunately, due to the laborers' lack of combat expertise, only two of the bolts actually find their target, This left the first drow seriously injured as he staggered into Gorin's reach...

( the unlabeled red squares are Drow warriors, each wearing a chain shirt and wielding rapier + buckler. )

( Combat engaged! )
( first up: Goodberry, Ahz, Gorin )

South Ballista keep you eyes peeled to the south and west." Note: goal is after he's patched up next round (via Touch of Healing on Ahz, distributed over the Collective), he can switch back to the Overseer.

Adoett is peeking around his shield, holding his carving knife up, ready to signal the firedrake. After it fires he'll jump in front of it to provide cover while it's reloaded.

Then, 2 minutes past the discovery of the tunneling creepers, a thunderous blast erupted from just outside the walls.

"The palisade... it just blew up! Whole chunk just outside the breach," Ranger1 reported, clearly not understanding what just happened.

Ahz and Goodberry both knew enough to guess (passive spellcraft): Explosive Runes could discharge a number of ways. The best case scenario meant it just killed a drow trying to sneak up. Or -- given Shurya revealed the defenses to the drow -- they triggered it with a Dispel on the outer wall.

Second later, another Vision of Hell erupted to bring inferno landscape to the material plane. This one only 50ft-radius and centered on the north walls (center marked VoH on map). It caught the north tower and all of those around the Firedrake in its area. Both of the ogres and all but one of the gnolls near Adoett looked shaken by the disturbing visage.

( Will save vs Fear from Adoett )

Then, almost at the same time, the Gnoll ranger shouted out: "DROW! MANY! 60FT OUT FROM 12'O CLOCK!"

The twang of his bow could be heard as he fired the first shot. Four arrows replied from the darkness in exchange. By the time the Ranger crouched back down to take shelter behind the battlements, two shafts were lodged in his shoulders.

"I think they're real..."

Adoett could hear the poor guy coughing up blood above him.

( Everyone can take their first round actions, or ready their actions. I'll shift into battle order once the drow are close enough to get messy. Adoett, Gorin, and Leah may also shift the gnolls/ogres around them into whatever formation they'd like. )

The attack from elsewhere didn't surface immediately. Only the hellish illusory landscape continued to plague those inside the fortifications. After 8 minutes, the illusion ceased as well, and still no attack was coming.

Then, a shout emerge from the northeastern tower: "THE WALLS! THEY'RE TUNNELING THE WALLLS!"

The gnoll ranger on the north tower was quick to report over the channel: "I don't see anything..."

From the Keep's northeast edge, Ahz's darkvision soon saw what they mean: three small holes had appeared on the inside of the soft, limestone walls. Some kind of fungus was chewing its way through the stone, rapidly enlarging the tunnel while supporting it with some kind of fungal tube network. The holes weren't large enough to fit a humanoid yet, but they were steadily growing...

Ahz sends a volley of arrows soaring out of the springal and into the moonlit skies. His sensor surveyed the target (now 70ft from the south tower) and he noticed his targeting was off... by 5ft. One of the hill giants groaned as he took a handful of arrows, and the drow caster screamed curses as she took two as well. The drow soon stopped 100ft away from the walls, and simply pointed the giants towards the gate.

The two giants continued their march upwards, soon coming within 60ft of the south tower. Each of them dropped one of their giant boulders on the ground while readying the other to throw. The gnoll overseer soon yelled "GIANTS! BOULDERS INCOMING AT MAIN GATE!" He then aimed the southern ballista and shot...

( any actions? )

As Ahz's Mind Eye flies out towards the south, the rest of you hear a tremor from afar. It was as if someone with really heavy footsteps was stomping towards the Keep. The lookouts on the walls huddle at the edge of their crenelations, barely peeking out to see what the noise was coming from. Then, when the Mind Eye sensor was about 100ft from the walls, it spotted the culprit.

Two hill giants were on the road. Each carried two rocks on their shoulders as they steadily advanced towards the fort. Behind them walked what seemed to be a drow spellcaster, wearing their robes and no armor at all. Considering that most drow in this region either prefers nothing to do with giants or outright didn't get along, Ahz has a strong feeling these giants were under some sort of charm or compulsion spell.

Ahz had been reading through his latest draft of his thesis ("On the Giants and Their Lasting Influence Over Eberron and the Multiverse") and scribbling half-joking theories in the margins of it about how the Drow could be further linked to the giants. Shaking his head, he drive the instinct of fear from his mind and puts the draft away into his bag. Closing his eyes, he conjures up a mind eye and starts moving it out towards the southern wall to scout around.

Standing besides Gorin, the gnoll overseer translates the shifter's speech into gnoll after every line with much gusto. According to him, many of their Common understanding was 'barely passing'. He seemed pretty hype about it too, and Gorin reckons that - contrary to the gnoll's profession - he might actually make a decent public speaker if he actually got the time to practice more.

(overseer uses Aid Another)

Gorin's words (and certainly his expletives) seem to catch the gnoll union's attention and approval as he went along. The delivery received many nodding heads in turn, and at its end many of them raised their weapons in a badly accented shouts of "fuck yeah!"

The ogres, however, scratched their heads. This many man-words was clearly too complicated for them. Nevertheless, seeing everyone else at it, they joined the throngs in raising their weapons and shouting nonsense.

-----

The laborers-turned-garrison await quietly in the mining fort, until around the time of hitting midnight. It had been quiet until then. The air had cooled to a slight chill, and the skies above were clear with a bright moon outside...

Then suddenly, a burst of evil magic strikes the keep. The entire keep, southern courtyard, western courtyard, the south/west towers and walls... about 2/3rd of the fort was instantly engulfed. The air seemed to shimmer as the entire area seemed to have displaced by the horrorscape of hell itself. A stream of lava flowed off the keep's crenellations, into a courtyard full of mangled rocks and skulls and bones. Craggy stone spires erupted from the walls and into the air, and the entire atmosphere began to smell of brimstone and sulfur...

( Will Save vs Fear from everybody in party )

Ahz, Goodberry, and Gorin recognizes the spell as a Vision of Hell spell, although the knowledge doesn't make the illusion feel any less real. Furthermore, this area this spell covered must be around 100ft in radius.

The gnolls in the area looked mostly look distraught at the strangeness their workplace has become, though none were freaking out or acting erratically. The overseer is already on his way to the southern tower's ballista.

( NOT in combat order yet, though feel free to make an Initiative check )

He sneered to the second comment: "Those darkdwellers barely know what 'fortifications' are. Siege equipment from them? Ha! I don't expect fliers either. No, they'll have to assault us the hard way."

-----

Current defense distribution:

Gnoll overseer (GNO): patrols around the walls with 2 gnoll laborers; heads to nearest ballista when action starts

North ballista tower: 1 gnoll ranger (with Bestow Weapon Proficiency potion), 3 gnoll laborers

South ballista tower: 1 gnoll ranger (with Bestow Weapon Proficiency potion), 3 gnoll laborers

Eastern tower: 3 gnoll laborers

Western tower: 3 gnoll laborers

Central keep: 3 gnoll laborers + Arrow Springal, Ahz, Goodberry

Reserve force: 10 gnoll laborers, 2 ogres, Adoett, Gorin, Firedrake (can be pushed by the 2 ogres into position; but need 3 laborers to crew it)

Remaining checklist items:
(1) Is Leah just staying with the mobile reserve or elsewhere?
(2) Distribution of darkvision pots, see invisibility pots, and grenades.
(3) Ahz's Brilliant Planner use.

Edit: updated both ballistas and springal to +1
added to Misc rules - Siege Engines: Direct-fire siege engine attacks resolve as touch attacks within 1st ranged increment; they also ignore Cover bonuses to AC unless the cover is made of mostly stone or metal. Indirect-fire siege engines can only inflict critical hits on structures.

We expect them to arrive with just numbers, poison, and bows right? They shouldn't have siege equipment to actually harm our siege weapons, so leaving them "apparently undefended" isn't a big deal, because the enemy's counter to them was going to be shoot the crew manning it. Or, Gnolling it as the case may be.

Ahz's Lay of the Land reveals to him that the drow could really come from three different directions: both the north and west have large sections of jungle that may mask their advance, the west slightly better as the trees advance to ~100ft of the fort itself. The south also see sparser patches of jungle that run along the road. Only the east is very unlikely, as the strip mine not only left a large depression on the ground but also left the terrain difficult to pass through.

Ahz's engineering knowledge was enough to discern that something was wrong with the Firedrake's firing mechanism, but not quite enough to figure out the details. He starts casting Repair Light Damage on it, and took 2 spells to fix due to his lack of understanding.

The Overseer comments that Watchful Eye didn't sound very useful considering they can't just watch the road or any one direction; however, Mind Eye sound good if they wanted to investigate a sound or something without leaving the fort.

As for the siege engines, he also comments: "trouble with the Drow is their guerilla tactics. You donno if they're just poking-n-prodding or if they're attacking for real until they're upon you. Those potions (Bestow Weapon Proficiency) only lasts 3 minutes. Also something you'll have to consider for any short buff."

For troop placements, he notes: "my suggestion would be to leave 3 workers in each tower, 3 on the keep to help the springal, and as the... treeforged says my rangers may be the best manning the 2 ballistas. That leaves 12 workers and the 2 ogres who can stay mobile. I think I'd be best heading for whichever ballista closer to the action and take 2 with me."

"We're opening the gates! Do not step inside or your life will be at stake!"

It takes a few minutes from the timber gate swings aside and the gnoll steps outside.

"The Gate is warded, Milord. Password," he turns about to face the gate and announces: "Vulkoor is a degenerate hermaphroditic five-copper lover of cock."

He gives the party a head-tilt: "Our wizard, likely ex-wizard's sense of humor. Please say it as you enter, lest you wish experience choking on your own vomit."

He then leads the way into the fort.

"I'm temporary Overseer here; supervisor was escorting the wagons back when... never heard from them. Also our whole security detail, except me and two warriors. Since you're here -- Milord -- it must be over their business. I got no idea how them dragonmark courtesy works, so excuse if I seem rude."

He then points at one of the gnolls by the gate and shouts something in their racial language. The gnoll nods and runs off, likely to gather the other laborers.

( Ahz gets the feeling that this guy didn't actually recognize his dragonmark. )

Koko produces a spare travelers' outfit (that she use as disguises) for Shurya. It certainly beats her half-torn clothes.

Shurya also thanks Gorin for the armor. If nothing else, it'll make her feel safer, which is an emotion she had not had for days.

(as usual: all your help towards aiding Shurya recover will provide bonus opinions later ^^)

...

By the time the party comes out from the cavern, the sun had mostly dropped off the horizon. Shurya and Koko bid the rest good luck as they begin their trek back to Stormreach, along the side of the road for some concealment without making things too difficult.

The rest of the party begins their journey towards the mines. With the maps to guide you, the journey takes about three hours. Thankfully the night sky was clear and the moon was bright, as there were no lights from civilization out here.

At least, there was no light until you made it to the mines.

It was as Shurya said: the dragonshard mine was very dug in.

Its location was a flatland region between tropical forests, where House Tharashk built a stripmine into the land. But on the edge of the strip mining facility was a fort: 15ft high stone walls ringed by a wooden palisade fence. A single timber gate controlled in and out. Four elevated guard towers provided lighting, though none of it was directly atop the walls where only shadowy sillouettes patrolled.

"Halt!" The party gets challenged as they approached the gate.

Those with darkvision notices a battle-scarred gnoll standing behind the battlements of the adjacent tower. In front of him was the sharpened steel of a ballista bolt ready to launch.

"Identify yourselves!" He shouted in the common tongue.

(the rest would require ability damage healing: you notice she has incurred STR, DEX, and CON damage)

Shurya seemed to take solace in Gorin's words as she swallowed and closed her eyes. A few deep breaths seemed to relax her a little, though as she heard Adoett she had to respond:

"I-I kept warning Kurn that these drow are anything but stupid barbarians; this trap is proof of that. Their home bases are deep underground, far too dangerous for any but the most well-prepared campaign. These..." her words failed her in trying to describe her tormentors. "My drow (language) isn't very good, but I think they were waiting for their leader to return in greater numbers. You arrived before them... so perhaps we still have a chance," there was a desperate hope in her gaze.

First Transfer Wounds:
2d6+5 = 4+5 = 9, Goodberry takes 4 nonlethal

Second TW:
2d6+5 = 10+5 = 15, Goodberry takes 10 nonlethal

"Well, if we kill them all, then it won't matter what you told them." he says flatly, as though it was obvious.

Adoett chimes over the telepathic net "This was just a scout outpost, not the main base. I doubt command would be caught as unawares."*

*Adoett intends this to be sort of chiding Goodberry for overstating the groups power, and doesn't realize that Shurya will hear his comments as well.

"T-the first ambush was a setup. They knew someone would come investigate. They wanted to lure someone in... they wanted..."

Tears began to roll onto her cheeks as she began to sob.

"I-I'm sorry. I couldn't take it; the pain had been too much." She looked down on her trembling hand, and you notice that several of her fingers were bloody at the ends because the nails had been pulled out.

"I told them everything they wanted to know... about the mining facility, our personnel, our schedule, our wards. Everything."
