About 30 mins normal ride (at normal pace, not the breakneck one you've been doing) is what appears to be a small ghost town, apparently abandoned after the Second Crusade. There hasn't been any sign of demons coming or going, and the town has been eerily quiet. Once today, one of the scouts saw a few hellhounds wandering to the north, but they turned and wandered off without any interaction with the scouts. The one who saw them couldn't tell if they were avoiding the town, or if they just naturally went another direction.

It is around 5 in the afternoon, you estimate another 1-2 hours of daylight. What do you do?

Show Dates: Agust 2nd - August 5th

Attendance Pre-Registration: TBD (likely Jan/Feb 2018)

Attendance Pre-Registration Cost: TBD ($90 for a four-day pass in 2017)

Event Registration: TBD (likely May 2018)

Room Cost: TBD (2017 was $515/person for those of us in double rooms)

Estimated Trip Cost (based on 2017 numbers): $90 (bage) + $515 (room) + $200 (food) + $150 (swag) = ~$1005

Likely Itinerary:
:!: Converge at designated departure zone(s) two days before the Convention.
:!: Spend the entire next day driving to Indy.
:!: CON! CON! CON!
:!: Depart Sunday*
:!: Resume boring, non-Gen Con, existence.

*Marty and I discussed the prospect of leaving on Monday morning instead of Sunday morning/afternoon. It would require an extra vacation day, but it would also mean we could do more events on Saturday (Saturday evening, in particular, is when a lot of cool events go down) and Sunday (and having our group dinner on Sunday evening would likely mean less of a crowd).

Thoughts?

Description: After a shipment bound for the Stormreach Foundry from one of House Tharashk's mines outside the city has gone missing, Viceroy Kurn d'Velderan ordered his best inquisitive, Shurya d'Velderan, to investigate the matter. However, since she hired some muscle for protection and left for the forest, Kurn has lost contact and, after over a week, has yet to hear back from anyone in her group. He fears that her party has been attacked by the same assailants who intercepted the shipment, and is putting together an expedition to investigate both the shipment and what happened to Shurya.
Unfortunately, all of the elite Duraak'ash hunters of House Tharashk that Kurn have access to are unavailable at the moment. Kurn fears that it may be too late by the time they return. Normally he would not approach a new group for such a sensitive matter, but the Xen'drik Outreach Society has trustworthy connections to House Tharashk (Ahz).

Missed Penalty: -25 attitude from the Dragonmarked House Tharashk; Ahz loses influence within the house
Failure Penalty: -10 attitude from the Dragonmarked House Tharashk; Ahz loses influence within the house

----------

It was another foggy Monday, and the industries of Stormreach were gearing up for yet another laborious week after the hubbub of the weekend. In a city ran by former pirate lords, few places exemplified this transition from the wild west to orderly production more than the Tharashk Refinery in Cross district's Graystone ward. The large building towers over its surroundings, belching smoke and emanating an obnoxious noise from its loud machines.

One fact was apparent -- there was no way anyone would want to live anywhere near it, which might explain why much of Cross district was occupied by dirty, destitute Cyran refugees.

Just as the party nears the refinery, the main gate opened for the departure of a large cargo wagon. Its wooden containers were filled to the brim with Eberron dragonshards -- one of the most valuable resources extracted from this frontier continent.

The two ogre security guards escorting the shipment merely looked at the party, saw Ahz, and grunted before moving on.

Inside the refinery, over a hundred humanoids from various races, and even a handful of giants, could be seen working at the machines or conveyor belts. Overseeing them was a tall and gruff-looking orc -- whom Ahz recognizes as Durgran'Torrn.

"Morning all. Kurn's waiting for you in his office," he told Ahz while giving the party an inquisitive look, before getting back to his own job. He seemed to spend a particular amount of time hovering around the giants, his gaze trained upon them with a distrusting look.

( Knowledge[local] if you're curious )

Durgran's words came as bit of an understatement though. Kurn was pacing about his room, jittery with impatience when the party arrived.

"Finally, you're here," he waved the party inside before offering them a seat on the cushioned couches in the room. Despite being attached to the Tharashk Refinery, the Tharashk Enclave that housed his office was surprisingly quiet thanks to its thick walls and double windows.

"Some of you may have met me already. I'm Kurn d'Velderan, leader of House Tharashk operations in Stormreach. My request comes rather urgent, so I'll get straight to the point.

"About two weeks ago, an armed transport ferrying dragonshards from our mining camp twenty-three-miles outside the city went missing. I had assigned the investigation to my best inquisitive, Shurya d'Velderan. I believe she approached you at the time, though it seemed you were too busy with other tasks. She hired one of the Xen'drik adventuring parties from within the city instead for security detail before leaving.

"That was over a week ago. Shurya might get too caught up in her work and forget to report in for two or three days, but this is absurd even for her. At this point, I can only guess that her investigation group had been attacked by whomever it was that intercepted our shipment, and I need a second team to track her down, figure out what happened, and if need be -- rescue her."

After anxiously pacing about the room as he spoke, Kurn plopped down on his chair with a deep exhale.

"Normally, I'd send one of my inquisitives with you. But as luck would have it, the remaining three are ALL away from Stormreach this week." He stared at Ahz before turning to the rest of the group. "I can only hope your company has the finesse to take care of this. Although I recommend hiring a jungle guide at least, unless you're very confident of your knowledge of the surrounding areas."

He hands the party a small bag from his table carrying the down payment.

"Now, any questions before you can get started?"

Lastly, based on which dragonmarked house you belong to, you will receive a +2 bonus to a specific skill.
The caster level for all least true dragonmark spell-like abilities is equal to 1 + 1/2 your character level, rounded down, and the spell level is always the lowest possible if it appears on multiple spell lists.

Daveed's special project for the campaign (other than say, killing all the demons) will be the formation of the Dawnguard: A holy order of mostly Sarenites and others with similar views dedicated to the Redemption of those corrupted by the World Wound. Those who show exceptional progress will be recruited into the Legion of the Redeemed, which will then, in turn, venture forth and find more candidates for redemption (and so on).

Initially, Daveed will use what funds he can scrape together to build/refit a building in Drezen into a workable barracks and administrative center. Eventually, he'd like to build a sizeable fortress around the Lost Chapel of Sarenrae (the one where we pub-stomped the advanced nabasu).

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Contact: Lysette, requesting for Brelish Consul Rusila ir'Clarn
Description: Several cells from the Brelish Swords of Liberty republican/terrorist movement have entered Stormreach. Their presence was already felt when they ran afoul of the Cyran extremist group Dannel's Wrath, resulting in a confrontation and left a Cross district tavern ablaze. As these people are a disgrace to the otherwise legitimate Brelish republican movement, Consul ir'Clarn wants them eliminated -- not arrested, not scattered, but dead and their bodies tossed into the sea.
Downpayment: 500gps
Completion Payment: 4,000gps. The Consul is also well connected with the elites of Stormreach and would be willing to make a number of recommendations/promotions for the company and its members (gain 20 Influence)
Failure Penalty: -20 attitude from Lysette and no more Brelish Consul mission requests.
Time Needed: Unknown
Time Limit: Unknown; they might leave next week, they might leave in two years.

---------------

February 10th (Week 2 Day 2)...

It was a sunny morning in Stormreach, a rare occurrence for this time of the year. The bustling Market District grew loud and busy hours before the usual time, as every merchant and peddler strove to take advantage of the good weather and abundance in customers.

Even the papers were energetic this morning, rocking the news with their new headline -- EXPLOSION ROCKS CROSS DISTRICT. Apparently the Cyran refugees had another 'border tension' conflict with the locals, leading to the Cyran militant group Dannel's Wrath taking it upon themselves to... persuade the locals of their ill judgment... by blowing up a shop with alchemicals.

Needless the say, neither the Stormreach Guard nor the district's non-Cyran inhabitants were amused. Several of Dannel's Pride community leaders -- including the merchant Lucile -- tried to control the damage by denouncing the use of violence, but it was too little too late. As far as most of Stormreach is concerned, there was little difference between Dannel's Wrath and the Cyran refugees: beggars, criminals, and rapists, the whole lot of them.

Even within the company itself, there had been a little bit of excitement. Gadget seems to have left, and without leaving so much as a note. But then... perhaps it wasn't surprising; he did used to work for a squad of covert warforged commandos.

In the meantime, however, the members of Xen'drik Outreach Society headed into the same district for another business: to answer the request made by Brelish Consul Rusila ir'Clarn.

The company's shareholder, Lysette, wasn't available to make introductions as she was still out of town; but no matter, as Leah had become somewhat familiar with the place. The officious building itself was an example of the consulate's lofty past -- when it represented the interests of the united, continental kingdom of Galifar and its agreement with the ex-pirate lords. But these days, it was an outpost that Breland could hardly care about.

Nevertheless, Rusila was a woman of class and privilege, and saw to it that the consulate was fully staffed and well connected. The party was greeted at the iron gates by an impeccably mannered butler, who soon lead the group down its marble halls to Rusila's meeting room -- complete with crystal chandeliers and antique tables made from Aundairian (although these days it should be called 'Eldeen') redwood.

"Welcome, welcome!" the consul stood up as she warmly waved the group to sit down. "It's still a bit early, so if you have any requests for breakfast or just a drink, Kyrillo--" she nodded towards the Butler, "--would be happy to take it."

As a Brelish woman in her early thirties, Rusila has long, dark hair; pale skin; and large violet eyes that suggest some elven blood. Her voice rings deep and smoky for a woman, but well intonated as she's an accomplished singer with music from goblin dirges to Brelish ballads.

"My cook is quite wonderful," she added with a cheery look, "as Leah can undoubtedly attest to."

...

It didn't take long before the pleasantries were out of the way and Rusila could delve down into business:

"It's good to have some people I can trust for this sort of task," she began with a smile. "The fact is -- this is a somewhat unpleasant task, even if we are on the side of justice.

"No doubt you've heard about the explosion Dannel's Wrath caused yesterday. Well, in Breland where I am from, the Swords of Liberty are even worse... these are terrorists actively trying to incite a war. Their attacks range everywhere from the Towers of Sharn to New Cyre, hoping to ignite dormant ethnic tensions and restart the conflict because they think Breland can win and rule the continent. The fact they claim to be fighting for the Brelish Republican movement against 'monarchical oppression' only makes it worse for what is otherwise a perfectly legitimate and progressive political faction that is concerned for the future welfare of the Brelish people."

"I have information from Breland -- straight from trusted sources -- that at least one cell of the Swords of Liberty have landed in Stormreach around ten days ago. What are they here for is something even we don't know. But what must be done is straightforward enough," her eyes glistened with stern determination. "I want you all to track these people down... wherever they're hiding. Find out why they are here, if you can..."

"--But make sure you slit their throats and cast their bodies into the sea," she finished with such a pleasant smile that it felt unnerving.

Of course, nobody in Stormreach would care. With all the crime gangs vying for power in this frontier city, a fresh body could be found at the docks almost every day.

"Dirty, but the right thing to do nonetheless. Plus you'll be well paid," she added as icing on top, "and I'll make sure that you'll be well connected for future businesses."

You don’t want to let your attention wander too much, so you keep your head down and make for the humidity and fecal musk of the reptile house. Still, it’s probably a good idea to keep an eye on the wildlife here; some of these critters are dangerous predators, cages or not.

(Welcome to the zoo! The zoo is guarded by UCAS Military Police, so you can't walk in here with any rifles or other large weapons. Knives are fair game. Pistols you'll have to make a concealment check for them. Squall, you could theoretically go in by drone, but you'll have to roll concealment for any weapons on the drone.)

Netizen knows he can't conceal his revolver from the MPs, so he leaves it in Weatherman's van.

Doctor Shadow prefers to not go unarmed, and manages to sneak in his taser and his light pistol.

(To sneak in a weapon, make a Palming + Agility [Physical] check and I'll let you know how it goes.)

---------------

February 6th (Week 1 Day 5)...

The morning fog had yet to lift from Stormreach as a low-pressure front pushed north from the rainforests. The month was still winter, a dry season for this frontier city. But this wave of oppressive humidity already foretold of the seasons to come, reminding members of flesh and blood to look upon the composite warforged with envy.

Respite district has always been considered the core of the ancient city. At every turn, the massive beams, columns, and floating ruins remind visitors of the magnificence of giant architecture. Even today it is considered one of the wealthiest districts in the city. The presence of the House Jorasco enclave here makes it clear that halflings do not run a charity -- they expend to be well paid for their medical services.

...But by the same token, the party expects to be paid in return for helping them.

The representative and main healer of House Jorasco in Stormreach is Alhaura d'Jorasco, a halfling even more squeaky in appearance than the rest of her kind. Yet despite her low stature, her constant expression of a stern governess left no question to whom is in charge here. Whatever stereotypes most hear about the meat-gnawing, dino-riding, adventurous halfling of the plains, it clearly did not apply to her.

"Adventurers for the garden," an aide noted as Alhaura stared at the party from down the hall.

"What is this, the fourth group?"

"Fifth."

"Well, let's hope this bunch actually prove worthy of my time," the healer sighed before walking up.

"Ladies, gentlemen, and..." she stared at Goodberry "foliage. Well I'm sure you'll certainly fit right into the gardens."

She then turns to the rest:

"My time is in short supply so I'll make this quick. Some idiot brought back a carnivorous plant from the rainforest and into the Gardens of Respite. We're not sure what it is because so far, nobody has managed to bring a sample back. Four groups have gone before you, and we've yet to hear back from any of them -- whether they've simply ran off with our downpayment or because they've simply been swallowed up by the plants. In truth, I'm not sure I can trust a no-name startup like your company either; but that Brelish businesswoman, Lysette, is one of our suppliers, so some faith is in order."

"I can't give you much information because we lack it ourselves. All I know is that the Gardens as a whole has been marked off-limited, which means my healers can't get there to retrieve much-needed herbs. Incidents of people gone missing have occurred all over the garden, so either the plants they brought back grew legs or the infestation has spread. In either case, nobody has been able to even give verbal accounts of the perpetrator, so clearly this carnivorous plant hides well among the foliage. Even my attempts to scry has come to naught in identifying the cause. But knowing that it is a plant -- I suggest you go prepared with aliments against poison and disease."

"If you have any questions, make it quick. I have a meeting with Omaren coming up," Alhaura spoke of the Stormlord of the forge as she waved her aide forward, his hands carrying a purse of gold coins for the group's downpayment (500gps).

contains links to those tools. The four items you will find are as follows:

1. The Rebellion Tracker

2. The Silver Ravens Recruitment Tables

3. Expanded Rebellion Teams (These teams replace the ones in the Player's Guide)

4. New Rebellion Actions

When the game begins, the responsibility of tracking the rebellion, compiling its membership, and organizing teams will be handed to you, the players. I suggest you find time to discuss who will manage the rebellion tracker, and how you will go about deciding the race and class of your supporters (I leave gender to your imaginations). Perhaps a rotating schedule? It's your call.

Until further notice, all of the above items are considered to be in beta. Take a look, and feel welcome to provide feedback. Feel like there's too much (or too little) detail? Talk to me, and we'll find a solution.

For the Rebellion!

Alia can be described as intimidating or terrifying, depending on who you are. While I doubt she'll get any awards for diplomacy, I'm sure Alia will be pretty useful in a variety of social situations. As things progress, she'll be more of a back-line gal, providing support via fear effects and manifesting nightmares.
