Shigeru quickly examines the explosive round, and dismisses it as underpowered compared to what he can make already. "Innovative, but weak. I could definitely upgrade that design into something that could put out some serious damage. Have a look at these," he says, pulling out several of his new rifle grenades. "Explosive, Incendiary, Force, and Water - for putting out fires, knocking people over, and knocking people out."

"Those metal cartridges are impressive though...combined with breechloading it speeds up reloading incredibly...And grapeshot rounds would be so much easier than carrying bags of pellets to hand-load blunderbusses...I wonder what they're using for percussion caps..." Shigeru starts examining the solid shot.

Just as the sun sets over the horizon and a tired Shigeru, after overseeing the construction work today, returns to deal with matters within his own temporary workshop, he heard two hard knocks on his door. Before he even had time to react, the door swung open and someone unexpected rushed in with radiating enthusiasm.
---It was that cat woman again.
"Rise and be honored by the presence of my exalted----" the cat that sat on top of Hiiraga Tsunami's head didn't get a chance to finish before she smacked it, hand-chop style. "---Her exalted highness, here to aid the research of struggling lesser mortals!"
Hiiraga didn't say another thing as she walked straight to Shigeru's table and slapped down several sheets of coarse paper: a blueprint of some weapon, full of notes jotted in scrawny writing with question marks --- probably the results of her research. A moment later she took out a shiny, cylindrical weapon from the extradimensional space of her belt and put it on the table as well, about arm's length long and with a wide, rifled barrel and a latched breech on the back.
"Tougou had to get this for us, you insufferably useless errant-minion! Behold the sight of the real Tulip#1-B superior-breechloading-hand-culverin-cannon-" The cat gave another yelp and finally shut up as Hiiraga smacked it again. Her response however, came as simple as it gets:
"What he said."
With Shigeru's existing research, he already know all the existing problems with rifling, breechloaded firing, and percussion caps... a working model might accelerate what remains greatly, once he has time again.

"Who cares about that! I--- we, must get one either way; in the name of technological advances!" her usually dulled voice was getting more self-righteous and haughty by the second. "Those Japanese muskets we use are merely cut-down imitations of the original!--- I was there you know, when cube-face finished his first musket based on a Tulip prototype!"

As Shigeru was moving the spare equipment that he wasn't taking on to the Mikawa mission into his new room, he noticed that the strange 'cat-abusing' person has dropped by again.
"Oi!" Hiraga Tsunami called out loudly as she approached, even though she was only ten steps short of Shigeru at this point. She also looked surprisingly excited, doing the greetings herself rather than just through the cat.
"I heard your gang was going to Mikawa! So I came to request a souvenir!" even her speech was louder than usual, and the voice was slightly grating on the ears. She crossed her arms and smirked, "Word has it that Custom's forces are there, so bring me back a Tulip!"

Shigeru manages to figure out two types of cartridges within one of the days. He also manages to refurbish the 20 muskets for the gun squad within the next 5 days' time (since you mentioned taking up that position).

She went from one item to another, setting the ones she looked over aside with relative care but without any sense of order. It didn't take her long to finish, after which she once again picked up Shigeru's attempts at creating powder shells or other forms of casing and examined it, before reaching into her long coat's pockets, which didn't bulge at all and is probably extradimensional, and took out a cylindrical shell made of wax-paper.
"House Tanegashima was working on this--- few years ago. Doesn't quite work right yet, but you should be able to figure out." She then tossed the cartridge towards Shigeru and began walking away, making a backwards hand waving motion towards him as she left.
(sense motive: Shigeru's pretty sure she's trying to 'test' him with this).
(prof/craft: you can create basic alchemical cartridges based on this prototype now--- will only take a day to figure out the issue, plus one day to 'invent' each cartridge type)

Shigeru was taking some time to maintain his devices--- cannon and rifle, outside the living quarters where there is more space to put things... when a purple-haired girl in her late twenties [~], wearing Tougou armor with a cat on her head and a rifle strapped on her back, walked over from her stroll. She didn't say a thing before she picked up the cannon that Shigeru had just finished working on and began to closely examine it in her hands...
