Ulrich is a kind benevolent priest, whose first duty is to the gods, second to his friends, and third to the church. He hates to see any pain, but understands the need to fight in this war. His primary job on the battle field is to prevent his team members from taking injury, and to protect them to the best of his ability. Every morning, he starts praying for 1 hour. He then gets with those that he will be with for the next 24 hours, and protects them with a divine ward. He then goes to his room and starts practicing with his lute. Later in the afternoon, he goes to the infirmary, and helps out as much as his spells will enable him. Afterwards, he studies his holy texts, or performs for the locals. He realizes that not everyone has the amount of faith to believe that the gods will see them through, or that the gods can prevent much pain, however he also knows that some people are not as prayerful because they are unknowing of the goods received from prayer. He also has a small, well hidden sadness that he is not a front lines warrior. This was caused by his failure to live up to his parents desires for a warrior son. That is why he always tries to be as close to the battle as he can be. • Osmund is immune to all transmutation spells (e.g. Disintegrate) as if automatically defeated by SR. This ability may be lowered or raised as a standard action.
• The wielder may order Osmund’s blade to glow with light, as if the center of a Daylight spell, as a move action.
• When held by a good aligned wielder, Osmund projects a Magic Circle against Evil. Furthermore, anyone within this circle gains immunity to spells of level four or lower, as a Globe of Invulnerability, but only against spells of the [evil] descriptor or cast by evil creatures. Legacy Abilities:
• Divine Booster (Mode): Command word activation by expending one turn undead attempt. Osmund charges up its positive energy core, ready to boost the magic of any spell with a burst of divine power. While this mode is active, the wielder may choose to expend a turn undead attempt whenever a spell is cast through the casting focus as part of the casting action. If they do, the wielder may make a turn undead check (1d20 + charisma modifier + misc modifiers) to grant the spell a sacred bonus to caster level based on the results of the check (see table below). If the wielder has the Intensify Turning epic feat [WOTC Epic Compilations], then he may use the results table given by that feat instead. This mode is automatically disabled if the wielder does not spend a turn undead attempt after a number of rounds equal to their turning class level.

• Flame Jet (Boost): Command word activation by expending three turn undead attempts. Osmund engages its rear booster, which begins to pour out sacred fire to push the weapon and wielder forward. While under the effects of this boost, the wielder gains 100ft (clumsy) fly speed or a +40ft bonus to your existing fly speed. As an immediate action, Osmund may boost its wielder’s speed to deific levels, moving up to 10 times their fly speed as part of a charge (or 15 times as a run action); however, the boost’s effects ends immediately afterwards and may not be reactivated for 5 rounds. This boost lasts for up to one minute or 1 round per turning class level, whichever is higher.
• Preservation (Counter): Upon casting any ‘mass’ conjuration (healing) spell, Osmund may store a portion of the positive energy healing brought forth to be used later. The stored healing energy remains up to 5 rounds, and may be discharged as an immediate action to provide effects equivalent to a single targeted version of the mass-spell effect. However, the stored spell uses the range and maximum healing limit of the original spell. For example, upon casting Maximized Mass Cure Critical Wounds, Osmund may reserve a Maximized Cure Critical Wounds (with close spell range & +40 maximum cap) to be used as an immediate action. The target of the reserved healing does not have to be a target of the original spell. Osmund may only store one reserved healing spell at any time.

History:
The Helge family was a high class family from Misalin when Patrick and his wife Charlotte gave birth to a boy. He was born thin and frail, and it must have been the will of Pelor that he survived. He grew up as any son to a Misalin Paladin-Warrior would, raised in the faith, but trained in the sword. However, he never really outgrew his clumsiness, and his body hadn’t inherited the strength of his father. This did not deter Patrick from training his son, as well as sending his son to Paladin academy when he came of age. Young Ulrich had an impressive sense of perception, which aided him in parrying attacks made at him, but his return attacks were weak with no force behind them. After two years of training in the Academy, he confronted his father about his obvious lack of talent. His studies in the Divine arts had always been his specialty, and he channelled healing magic better than most. He had had the opportunity to hear one of the traveling Evangelists give a performance in <insert hometown here> and decided that that would fit his abilities very well, as he had always been given solo parts during choir performances. His father accepted the fact that his son was not a warrior and that he had received all the martial training he could give him. He did have a sharp mind, was almost supernaturally perceptive, and a very agreeable person, so it was with his father’s blessing that he eventually left on the road to seek out and tour the churches of Misalin, and gain his Priesthood. He met with success having found his calling, and his faith flourished. His laymen loved him, and people traveled to hear him sing soothing carols and hymns, especially during the main celebrations. He learned that words could help mend injuries and infused his song with divine healing, letting his compassion and love for his countrymen literally float on the air around him, healing and revitalizing everyone around him.
That was when disaster struck. War returned to the world of Penthiae just as his father had suspected it would. Ulrich made his father proud and immediately signed up to join the battle clerics squads and help defend his homeland. He quickly learned that dispelling enemy troops was something that a battle cleric could excel at as well, and began studying better methods to break through the magic of the Norinth casters. A week later, he got a letter from his Father’s unit. Patrick and Charlotte had both died in a raid. After attending their funeral, he vowed to improve his healing capabilities so that no more families would have to go through the loss of loved ones, even if it was for a noble cause. His next two months were spent in an almost obsessive state of study and prayer. Meditation forged a stronger connection to his beliefs, and allowed him to channel more divine power at once. Study unlocked secret techniques to dispel enemies, and ways to fortify protections cast on allies. Prayer strengthened his faith to the point where he was seeing everything as a sign. In short, he was just the kind of follower that Lord Anstrun was looking for in his close circle.
Anstrun sent for Ulrich shortly after the attack on Capital City, and began sending him on specific missions and inviting him to meals. Ulrich was amazed at his fortune and worked hard to impress his Lord, and became a trusted friend and ally of Anstrun’s. He was eventually promoted to Cardinal, and took part in the creation of a rather special Quarterstaff to mark the occasion. Ulrich was truly honoured to help give birth to his now most trusted friend and ally. Osmund helped him save many lives on the battle field. Ulrich’s natural talent and firm resolve combined with Osmund’s intricate knowledge of divine energies and spell powers made them a formidable team in combat, keeping those around them alive and refreshed for hours after a normal man would expire. Together, they never lost a man on a battlefield.
Ulrich was assigned to a couple different groups throughout the conflict with Norinth, usually near the front lines, and with commanders from high up in the Paladin Order. He never questioned this, assuming that Anstrun was merely allowing him to honor his father by fighting side by side with the Paladins his father had wished he would become. He was even stationed with <Pick one: Cary/Kovis/Lenneth> for a short time. He was slightly surprised when Cary and Kovis “defected†as Anstrun put it, but fully accepted the words of his friend and mentor. After that, he was assigned to go aid Kati in her defense of Trelling. He hoped that others in the Paladin order wouldn’t show as much disloyalty to the state as Cary and Kovis had, but he was determined to do his best to help the church no matter what. Throughout all of this, Osmund had not been quite as willing to believe that Cary and Kovis had simply defected. He wanted to know their reason, for he knew it took a lot of resolve to do what they had done.

Osmund’s counsel, combined with the personality and meetings Ulrich had with Sir Derrovar led him to realize how power hungry his once trusted friend truly was, and how his actions were disrupting the balance of things in Misalin. He also had a dream on the night after the showdown in the Teleportation Keep in which his father appeared to him and asked him to question the motivations of those around him. “A warrior’s greatest asset is not his blade or his muscle, but it is his mind. His mind gives him resolve, and finds a cause worthy of his devotion. A truly great warrior does not fight because his leaders tell him to, but because he has found it in his heart that the cause is just, and has made it his own.†After a full morning of meditation, he consulted Osmund, who agreed that Anstrun had deceived and used them to his own ends. They decided that Derrovar was working for the best of Misalin, though they knew little of his order’s doctrine, having never met or learned of Lord Strusler.

Thus did Ulrich give himself wholeheartedly to the Paladin’s cause, and the defense of those in Blackbog. When he arrived in the ruined keep, he could feel the love and pride of his father wash over him, and he knew he was doing the right thing, a feeling he had come to miss over his years under Anstrun.
